Album Review | A Great Big World | Is There Anybody Out There?

A GREAT BIG WORLD‘Is There Anybody Out There?’ from American musical duo A Great Big World is a feel-good coming-together of Broadway and the charts.

Some might draw comparisons with the band, Fun, and I would have to agree there is certainly a similarity in the theatrical sound and bold vocals. But this 13-track journey of heartbreak, transformation and break-through is not your ordinary album – its a full stage production.

Don’t get me wrong, every track on ‘Is There Anybody Out There?’ would be perfectly enjoyable as a stand alone, but the real magic happens when you listen from start to finish.

Upbeat ‘Rockstar’ kicks off the musical journey, introducing us to the characters (Axel and Vaccarino), which leads into the more melancholy mid-section led by stripped back ‘Say Something’ perfectly showcasing strong vocals. Before we can get too lost in our feels, Axel and Vaccarino quickly re-jollied it up with ‘You’ll be Ok’.

You’ll Be Ok’ is one of my favourite tracks on this record. If I had to describe it, I would say ‘The President of the United States of America’ meets ‘Barenaked Ladies’ with ‘Everyone is Gay’. Decidedly tongue-in-cheek and cheerful – a perfect balance to the past few more serious tracks – it puts you right back on the Broadway track and gearing up for the finale.

After listening to the album, I was unsurprised to learn single, ‘This is New Year’, (originally released 2 years ago) was performed on hit TV show Glee. It’s pure feel-good, piano-led goodness that translates well for the hit TV show.

Whether you like Glee and everything it embodies or not, don’t write off or underestimate how much you will enjoy this album. Axel and Vaccarino are immensely talented and manage to capture what music is all about: entertainment.

Get ready for front row seats at a sell out New York show.
