Album Review | Broken Bells |After The Disco

broken bellsIt’s no surprise that there has been a surge in disco synth bands to the mainstream and the latest track from US Indie band Broken Bells wants you to break out the flares, perm your hair and shake your body to the groove à la Travolta in Saturday Night Fever.

Broken Bells consists of duo Brian Burton and James Mercer who together have already created one self-titled studio album which dropped in 2010. Brian Burton is well-known as his alter-ego Danger Mouse and has created musical gifts with the likes of Beck, U2, The Black Keys, Gorillaz, Norah Jones and many other accoladed musicians. James Mercer is also associated with American indie rock band The Shins.

The first track released towards the end of 2013 from their second full length offering was ‘Holding on For Life’. A slower disco-infused track complete with BeeGees vocal ranges, but with great emotional depth held within the lyrics and more than willing to let you spin round in the discotheque before building up to a slightly heavier bridge and oozing back into a glamorous cinematic ending.

The second single release ‘After the Disco‘ brings together a groove heavy bass line, funky drum beat and 80’s filled synth keys all moulded together with a beautiful flowing melody that makes you want to hit the glittering dance floor and keep going until the sun rises.

After having great success in the US with their debut album selling over 400,000 copies as well as a sell-out tour, the pressure is on to follow-up with a new artistically celebrated masterpiece instead of falling as a one hit album wonder. However, the songs we have been treated to so far proves the band have indeed continued their great team effort to create a sure favourite follow-up and brings confidence that second album ‘After the Disco‘ will have been worth the three-year wait.

You can get hold of the full album ‘After the Disco’ (same title as the single) from February 4th.
