Album Review | Yellow Ostrich | Cosmos

yellow ostrichAfter being inspired by personal travels and cosmological musings, Yellow Ostrich have found their new sound for their latest album, ‘Cosmos’.

A ten-track album that carries their individual and collective discoveries, it’s one that takes you on a journey and leaves you in wonder.

Terrors opens this album with a dawn of a new day. It’s like the quiet hours of the morning just as the sun breaks through the horizon. The genesis of the accompaniment compliments the lyrics to the song and lives up to the title. Neon Fists changes the vibe slightly with a more Latin feel. The percussion fills most of the accompaniment, but leaves you wanting to move and sing along. There’s a darkness and a spice to the sound that entices your senses. Which is great because Shades continues that spiciness and adds an edginess to the sound that preceded it.

My Moons changes the tone and brings down the tempo slightly. The vocals dominate this song and you’re left listening to the bittersweet story embedded in the lyrics. Still retaining the quietness from the previous track, You Are The Stars, grabs your heart and has it beating to the rhythm of the song. It slowly picks up as the song progresses, still leaving you very much attached to the track.

In The Dark follows through taking the tempo down along with the fullness of the previous track. It’s like taking a breath after your entire being followed the beating of the drums of life. There’s a sense of loss in this track and longing emanates from every segment. But as Any Wonder picks up the tempo once more, and this time with a slight dose of attitude, the bass and the vocals draw you in closer and closer. It’s just as edgy as Shades, but there’s a much more grit to its undertone.

Mellowing out, How Do You Do It brings out a fuller sound, asking how others make certain decisions that they do. It’s still got that hint of attitude that the previous track had, but this time, it pulls back, giving the track a wondering feel. Things Are Fallin’ dives, in terms of the tempo and fullness in sound, as the album draws to a close. It’s relaxing and catchy and races to the finish line gracefully. By the time Don’t Be Afraid is playing, you’re in awe of what has just been playing through your system, closing strong with vocal dominance and a cohesive and full accompaniment.

Overall, Cosmos is the soundtrack to a chilled afternoon with a book and cup of tea in your hands. It’s one for the local café or an indie film. Yellow Ostrich should be proud of what they’ve produced. This latest release is both upbeat and mellow for any occasion you choose to have it playing in either the forefront or background of your event.
