Always The Quiet Ones; Freak Show

By Ryan Wilkinson

Always The Quiet Ones are a five-piece alternative rock band from Liverpool. Formed in February 2010 Blas Barragan Jr. (vocals), Joe Danher (guitar), Adam Lucas (guitar), Chris Nicholls (bass) and James Lorenzo (drums) released their debut album ‘Headcase’ in April 2010 and have already performed live shows alongside the likes of Deaf Havana and AndSoIWatchYouFromAfar, quickly gaining them interest from fans and media attention.

Too often these days you are handed an EP from an aspiring band that simply, isn’t anything special, who lack originality and leaves the listener bored of hearing the same recycled garbage over and over again.
This, however is not the case with Always The Quiet Ones. Basing their style well in the alternate rock scene, there are signs of darker influences at work here that immerse you into a world you may find quite unfamiliar. With strong, powerful vocals, tight guitar work and precision drumming, ATQO have created a unique sound that will leave you wanting more.

‘Sign of the Times’ takes you for an energetic ride with an intro sounding almost old-school Biffy Clyro that fires into a Foo Fighter-esque riff, making you want to jump to the ceiling. Alongside the heavy melodic riffing comes Blas’ raspy, shouting vocals you don’t often hear anymore which gives the song much more edge. With an explosive intro that lights the fire for the song, at no point does it burn out. This fire rages on till the very end!

‘Valentina’ brings to us more melody, breaking down with clean guitars and vocals then erupting into a powerful chorus. Gripping you from the very beginning it doesn’t fail to impress with well thought out structure and integrity. Constantly building with every instrument working perfectly together to create a devastating crescendo, ‘Valentia’ will be an easy one to remember.

Things take off a little slower with ‘Freak Show’ bringing a darker side to the band’s style but, don’t get too used to it as it quickly blasts into some heavy riffing before falling back into clean guitars and vocals. There is definitely a deeper, almost sinister feel to the work behind this song. With a chorus that belts “We are the freak show” it is definitely one to get the crowd singing along to.

Alternative rock has forever constantly been a changing art and ATQO have proved that change is good. Bringing a darker side to rock they have created a unique sound which won’t go unnoticed. This is a band to look out for to any fans of the rock scene.
