Just Surrender; Phoenix

Pop-punk rockers Just Surrender present their new album Phoenix, produced by Lou Giordano (Taking Back Sunday, We The Kings). After selling over 40,000 albums to date and performing at Warped Tour and Bamboozle, the band live up to their expectations with this excellent album.

Through The Night is a strong song from the album which contains powerful lyrics and most which are extremely relatable for their fans. With it’s contagious chorus and strong vocals, the songs rhythm and beat are catchy from just one listen as the two vocals duel alongside each other perfectly.

Take Me Home showcases the bands American vocals, stronger than other tracks. The vocals fit in perfectly with the strong rhythm throughout and the song manages to showcase both lead vocals with ease. The track is again catchy and easy to get into and despite the not as cheery lyrics in the song, the more upbeat pace make the fact almost unnoticeable and is a bonus for the style of song.

Crazy shows that the band do not hold back to kick the song into full force. With it’s punchy introduction and no build-up needed, it is straight into the main ‘action’ of the song. The track again has catchy lyrics and only needs one listen to make you feel involved by the end of the track, making it a good choice for a live set as the crowd could easily pick up on this.

On My Own is one of the strongest songs on the album and showcases the fact it is a well produced track with ease. The vocals in the song are again a strong point and with it’s catchy chorus and bridge, it’s easy to pick up with one listen. Again, the band show their talent for lyrical stylings, as they are extremely easily to relate to again for fans. It is a strong song overall and can easily be imagined as a full-energy part of a set, if it was to be played live.

Burning Up‘s music style is most alike The Starting Line’s on the album. The track provides a good song to singalong to and is one of the tracks that will be most appealing lyrically, as it applies to the typical style of popular songs on the same theme. The vocals match the style of song with ease and it is extremely easy to catch onto lyrics by the end of the song.

Lose Control contains a very different introduction, but this works well to the style of the song. It is again showing the fact this is a well produced album and there are plenty of moments in the song that can be imagined on live set with ease. The vocals in the song come across as the stronger American style alike the typical american-punk sounding voice, yet vocals from Just Surrender are stronger than what you expect from your typical pop-punk lead singer.

Carried Away is another strong song on the album with it’s summery-feeling acoustic touch and indeed with it’s cute lyrics, it is bound to make girls ‘fall at the bands feet’ with ease. The band manage to sing the lyrics with charm in their voices and it provides extremely easy listening. Carried Away also showcases the talented guitar and percussion skills in the instrumental section, showcasing the band have a talent for acoustic with ease.

The band have the punk style similar to alike American bands, but they do have unique factors that allow them not to fully merge into the category. The strong point’s for the band are that their lyrics are extremely relatable and vocals very strong. The only downside would be that some tracks can sound similar at the beginning. Despite this fact, the band do indeed manage to draw this point back somewhat, as each song is different once it gets into the full swing of things.

Just Surrender would be a welcomed addition to the UK as another alternative American band and would do well as such, due to the fact bands alike have had extremely good receptions on their visits to the uk and this band offer that something a little different and stronger.
