Kill The Weekend; Liars and Lovers

By Kirsty Armitage

Kill the Weekend are a relatively new 5-piece band from Watford Hertfordshire & London. Since their formation in 2009 the band has been working tirelessly to make a name for themselves. After a heavy summer of gigs under their belt – including a packed out Guilfest – the release of Liars and Lovers is perfectly timed.

This EP, the second to come from this up and coming UK pop-rock band, has me a bit excited. With a tilt of the hat to You Me At Six and a definite nod in the direction of No Use For A Name, but with their own irrefutable sound, this band has all the scope for a rosy future.

The 5 track EP, Liars and Lovers is an erudite mix of everything you’d come to expect from the pop-rock genre; bouncy melodies, strong guitar riffs, thrumming bass and vocals that resonate with the listener. This EP has an honest and raw edge that strikes a beautiful balance that few bands are able to achieve on their second EP.

Deeks is an undeniable talent, his vocals in ‘Strength and Innocence’ are heartfelt and beautifully set off by the female accompaniment. Similarly, they lose none of their impact in racier numbers like ‘This Fire Feels Like Home’ and ‘Three Times Unlucky’, rather the opposite.

Similarly, Wyatt and Munro put across exemplary guitar work throughout the EP, changing effortlessly from the forceful riffs that define ‘Beyond Everything North’ to the soft and melodic back notes in ‘Strength and Innocence’.

Liars and Lovers is a truly well put together collection of music that has touching melodies, strong vocals, punchy guitar and drum beats that all combine for compelling listening. In a popular genre like pop-rock, it’s hard to make yourself stand out, but if this EP is anything to go by….

Watch this space, Kill the Weekend are going to be huge.
