Shush; Soundtrack Of My Life

London alt-rockers Shush have steadily built themselves a devoted following since the release of their 2008 self-titled EP. Rock Sound, Metal Hammer and Total Rock were just a few of the areas to shower praise onto the band, who went on to tour the UK a number of times to much acclaim.

Do What I Want has a strong guitar empowered introduction. As it has become a somewhat rarity, it is nice to hear a female frontwoman for the alt-rock sound. The vocals are strong and suit the style well and the lyrics would transcend easily as a live set for crowd interaction. The instrumental section within the song is extremely strong also.

Got Caught In The Act has a powerful introduction that sounds more like your ‘typical’ alt-rock band. The vocals are showcased even better in this track than the earlier and it has an extremely catchy rhythm, which by the end of the first listen you can latch onto with ease. The same applies with the chorus and its catchy attitude. The songs lyrics could also potentially have a wide appeal, with the stylings in the song.

All My Life is another song that showcases the band know how to put together a strong introduction. The lyrics again are relatable to everyone and this song in particular is a good song to showcase the bands musical talents, rather than the vocals being the main point of the song. It conveys through this that the band can play their instruments well and the song provides many points that would work well for a festival set, or a live set in general, for crowd interaction.

F**ck You; With the title of the song you can expect the attitude conveyed within. Despite this, it does have an unexpected introduction that is not as aggressive as you would expect, yet the strong vocals and lyrics showcase the titles point clearly. This song would most definitely go down extremely well at a gig or festival set, as there is no doubt everyone has wanted to get the message across the song manages to do well! Overall, it is indeed as the title suggests an attitude packed punchy song.

Stay showcases a different side to the band. With its powerful introduction, it contains a solid beat throughout. Despite the lyrics being that of your typical love-type song, it is a nice touch to see it as a more rock version, again particularly with the female vocals making it stand out from the alike. It is very different from the other tracks, but works well with the lyrics and vocals. Overall, it provides another catchy song from the band.

Favourite Game again showcases the bands secure instrumental talents. The song manages to showcase the bands attitude with ease and again has well-written lyrics throughout. It seems that the band perform them with ease.

You Will Never Get contains an extremely heavy rock-alt punk introduction. It is very different from the rest of the tracks, but it comes across that the female vocals do not suit the ‘screamo’ style as well. It does show the band can be versatile in this direction with its extremely fast pace, but any meaning of the song is lost due to such.

The only problem with the album is that most tracks can sound rather similar than the previous and you can get lost within this. It is a nice change for a female front-person who has strong vocals, yet the songs do become a little lost within each other. The band prove they can play their instruments well and are very strong with their song introductions. The lyrics throughout the album can easily be related to for anyone and are well-written, so they can appeal to a wide audience in this sense. The songs introductions, despite their strength, can become a bit lengthy if you are listening to the album start to finish.

Overall this album proves that Shush know what they are doing and how to do it well, but with only one extremely versatile track, the others may become a little lost within the mix.

‘Soundtrack of My Life’ is set for release on November 1st.
