Travie McCoy; Lazarus

Travie McCoy releases his debut solo album “Lazarus” tomorrow via Atlantic Records. The first single ‘Billionaire’ has became a well-known hit and it seems this was just a sign of things to come from the album which is bound to be a success.

Dr. Feelgood (Feat. Cee Lo Green) contains a strong introduction, beat and rhythm. The lyrics can be easily picked up and with the songs contagious chorus, it can be imagined that it could become a catchy summer song to sing-along to with ease. It contains a wide appeal with it’s cleverly written lyrics and clarity in the vocals makes the song easy to understand, which can be a problem for rap artists alike, but you can make out what he is saying with ease. The chorus is the strongest point of song with it’s catchy beat and rhythm. In particular, there is a section in the song which would allow crowd interaction if it were to be played live. The song is one which is guaranteed to get you singing along and even your feet tapping along by the end of the song.

Billionaire (Feat. Bruno Mars) is the song most people will know and will be the point that showcases the album for most. With it’s excellent introduction, as it is totally different to the usual, makes the song extremely appealing. It contains strong lyrics which are well suited for the style of the song. It contains somewhat of a Caribbean feeling throughout due to the backing beat. The song again has a wide appeal and the chorus is an excellent showcase of the strong vocals. The lyrics themselves are based on a strong theme choice, as it is becoming a fact that no doubt most people at one point will have fantasised about becoming a millionaire themselves making the song easily for fans to relate to.

Need You contains an R&B feeling as the song begins. The song contains strong vocals and lyrics and hosts an extremely appealing lyrical formation that is popular these days. With the songs up-beat rhythm which enters full power at the chorus, it is extremely easy to catch onto and sing along with the cleverly written lyrics in the chorus. It is another song which contains a strong chorus. By keeping the rest of the song not as strong a beat, it allows the chorus to stand out itself and make it seem even more powerful.

Akidagain contains a strong beat. The song is unique with it’s clever use of children singing the lyrics about being a kid again, the irony that they already are is perhaps a note to make you think about cherishing the time you have as a child and how we all at one point have thought we want to be a child again at some point in their life. The song contains a clever use of mixing up different styles, by keeping the children’s voices throughout it adds a nice touch by spreading the theme of the song throughout. The song again showcases the fact the song has cleverly written lyrics and again the very different touch works well for the style of the song.

We’ll Be Alright takes the opening lyrics and continuing sections throughout from the well-known contagious Supergrass hit ‘Alright’, yet mixes up the lyrics bringing the song forward to the 21st century. The song itself contains the potential to be a hit as it is easy to catch onto and is extremely contagious, to the point which you cant help but join in and sing along. The song has a very strong beat, clever lyrics and is extremely appealing. You can imagine it easily being a success in a nightclub or even to be played on the radio. The song style is best described as a mix of 3oh!3 and the Black Eyed Peas. It contains a clever use of mixed styles which manage to work together with ease and is strongest song on the album.
If you were only to check out one track on this album, definitely give this one a try.

After Midnight bursts straight into the song, with it’s catchy beat. The song allows everyone to easily join in. The song contains a nice mix of vocal stylings throughout, which has became a popular choice to do so therefore the chorus will be easy for people to pick up and join in with. This is another song that would go well down in clubs with its strong beat and again has a wider appeal with it’s upbeat style.

The whole album overall projects an extremely summery feeling and the album contains many tracks which could become hits. The strongest tracks on the album would be After Midnight, We’ll Be Alright. Billionaire and Dr. Feelgood. The album manages to become one which is ‘genre-busting’ and will manage to appeal to an extremely wide audience over a variety of genres. Travie McCoy has managed to easily prove that he can work solo on an album and produce one which has been worth his time making and would be worth your time to listen to.

But don’t worry if you miss Gym Class Heroes, as currently Travie McCoy and Gym Class Heroes are currently writing a new album which is due for release next year.
