Annie Afrilu wins music category of Samsung Launching People project

Samsung The Ones To WatchSouth London singer-songwriter Annie Afrilu was chosen by Paloma Faith as the winner of the music category in Samsung’s Launching People project.

Hailing from Crystal Palace, Annie Afrilu was selected by Paloma as part of Samsung’s Launching People project which began a search for undiscovered British and Irish talent with a passion for food, film, music and photography.

Annie was revealed as Paloma Faith’s protege in the television series ‘The Ones To Watch’, produced by Fresh one, which will air on Sky 1 at 7pm every Sunday until June 8th.

Paloma Faith said: “I came into this project looking for something that we’ve not seen in a British artist before. What was important to me was that the person had something innovative to offer, something that defied genre. I was looking for an outsider as I love and relate to outsiders. The thought of finding someone like that really excited me and that’s what I found in Annie.”

The 24-year-old wrote her submission song Fade To Blue while on a 24 hour bus ride home from Poland to London. The debut song has already earned her a performance headlining Tony Moore’s The Bedford Live as she follows in the footsteps of her inspirations including Etta James, Pavarotti and Mariah.

But the show wasn’t her first leap into the music world as at 16 she earned a scholarship at the Trinity College of Music and now runs her own live night ‘Lovebird Club’ which will relaunch on Wednesday 25th June.

Following the show, Annie is already planning to launch the first in the trilogy of releases titled ‘Memoirs of a Lovebird’.

Commenting on being part of Samsung Launching People and The Ones To Watch on Sky 1, Annie said: “After seeing an advert for Samsung Launching People on Facebook and discovering that Paloma, who is my favourite artist, was involved I immediately knew that I had to take part. If I had to choose a mentor, it’d be Paloma – she’s given me such incredible support and advice. The best thing about being part of Samsung Launching People has been learning about all the aspects of a professional team that make an artist’s career.”

Annie’s Launching People submission can be found at via the Launching People website. She is also giving free downloads of her submission song “Fade To Blue” through her website at http://annieafrilu.com.

President, Samsung UK and Ireland Andy Griffiths said: “Everyone knows Samsung for launching products and every day we’re inspired by people who use those products to achieve amazing things. ‘Launching People’ is all about doing just that – launching people’s potential through technology, whatever their stage in life. We wanted to give people with passion, ambition and a hungry mind, a launch pad for their bright ideas and change their lives in a positive way.”
