EP Review | You Me At Six | Cold Night

You Me At SixYou Me At Six are back with new single Cold Night and are treating fans to an EP in the process.

The title track, Cold Night is the third single to be taken from the band’s most recent album ‘Cavalier Youth’, behind Fresh Start Fever and Lived a Lie. This song takes a much mellower direction, showing that these five lads from Surrey still have a softer side. Its verses provide gentle drum taps and soothing guitar melodies. Emotive lyrics such as ‘the talk of forever kept us warm’ are sung before sweeping into a loud, passionate chorus, complimenting the raw emotion in Josh Francesci’s voice perfectly. Topped off with a big guitar solo with haunting voices reminiscent of 30 Seconds to Mars, this song is a real treat.

The EP also features three live tracks from the band’s latest Radio One session. Lived a Lie and Fresh Start Fever take all the energy and fun from the recorded versions and convert it seamlessly into great live rock tracks. Josh’s voice still sounds pitch perfect, though in both songs extra drum beats and organic shouts can be heard, adding a truly raw and heartfelt feel to the tracks.

A cover of the 1969 The Beatles classic Come Together is also included on the record. There is always a certain risk that comes with covering such legendary songs, but the band certainly pull it off. The deep bass and smooth beats mixed with guitar riffs make for a really cool track. The original Beatles harmonies can be heard whilst adding their own distinctive spin, making for a really great cover.

As the last song fades out, it leaves you wanting to go and see You Me At Six at their next show. There are some bands that disappoint live, but You Me At Six are certainly not one of them. They are a band that has certainly perfected their art of addictive pop rock.

Cold Night EP is available to purchase now.
