Fringe 2014 | Interview | Jonny Awsum

As the first full week at the Fringe kicks off, we caught up with Jonny Awsum to find out more about his festival show.

How would you describe your Fringe show in three words?

Funny, feel-good,fun.

You’re mates with Frank Turner, has he influenced your performance in any way?

Definitely. What I’ve learned from Frank is that every show is special, no matter how many people, you have to give it your all no matter what.

Who would you say musically has influenced you the most?

Queen. I do a bit in my show about how watching them on TV live from Wembley when I was a kid changed my life. Like Queen I like to entertain and rock the house wherever I go.

What has been your favourite performance to-date?

The first time I played the Glee Club in Birmingham, I was relatively new and I hadn’t played to an audience that big before (about 400 people) I had an absolute corker and just didn’t want to come off.

Are there any Fringe nights in particular that stand out from previous years?

Yep, last year my show was all about trying to tick off a special ‘to do list’ and one of the things on the list was to take the audience with me onto the radio to sing a song. After one show we did just that, jumping into cabs and heading straight to the radio station for an interview and song – it was an amazing night.

And of course, what’s the sexiest noise you’ve heard?

Ah well, you see, people need to come to the show in Edinburgh to hear the tale of that one!

Anything else you wish to add?

Well, I have just bought a bath mat so that the comic Mark Simmons (who I am sharing a flat with in Edinburgh) and I can shower in luxury (separately I might add!).

See Jonny Awsum – Sexy Noises at the Gilded Balloon: Balcony during the Edinburgh Festival Fringe from 30th July – 24th August.
