Interview | Natasha North

It’s not often emerging artists can start the year securing a support slot on an arena tour.

But for Natasha North, 2015 has launched with her landing the support on Train’s UK arena tour playing venues including The O2 in London and Manchester Arena.

This news followed the singer’s first airplay on Radio 1, following a very successful 2014.

Launching the year with a host of successes, we caught up with Natasha North to find out more about touring, her music and what 2015 holds.

For those who haven’t heard your music, which track would you recommend they start of with?

My personal favourite on the latest EP is the title track ‘Fire’, so I would say listen to that one. It’s maybe not the most upbeat track out of the four but I think it represents my sound the best!

Are there any artists at the moment that you find particularly inspiring?

I’m currently really enjoying listening Years and Years, I think their songs are brilliant and I love their live set-up. I find bands or artists that do interesting things live extremely inspiring.

How was it working with Paul Stanborough for your ‘Fire’ EP release?

I’ve been working with Paul for a couple of years now so I always feel so comfortable working on records with him. We are both completely on the same page and know between us what we want to achieve. I love working with someone who understands what I’m trying to portray with my music. I think it’s important when working with producers to be open to new ideas, and that’s certainly what Paul brings to the table.

You’ve recently come off tour with Big Sixes, what was your favourite part about touring?

Touring with Big Sixes was really awesome, they are lovely boys and we had an amazing time. Everything about touring is brilliant, apart from maybe the lack of sleep! For this tour, I went out on the road with my own band for the first time, and the experience that we gained was invaluable. Playing live is no doubt one of the best things about being a musician, so to do that every night in a new city is just so much fun!

You’ve had a jam-packed year from festivals to sold out headline gigs, if you had to select just three highlights of 2014, what would they be?

2014 has been a really fun year for me, I’ve loved every minute! It’s really tricky to pick out three highlights but I think the main highlight was my sold out headline show in November at St Pancras Old Church. I’ve played a lot of really cool shows this year but when there are people coming to see you specifically, there is no better feeling. The church also added a really atmospheric vibe and hearing lots of people sing back my songs was something I won’t forget for a while. The other two stand out highlights for me would be playing Reading and Leeds festival and playing at the Royal Albert Hall in September!

If you had to pick one venue to headline in 2015, where would it be?

The O2? Ha, I joke! There’s a venue called Bush Hall which is beautiful, I’d love to headline a show there. Fingers crossed it might happen!

What can we expect from you in 2015?
I hope to continue touring, releasing music and enjoying myself. I think that’s the most important thing. Hopefully I may have my own UK headline tour and also be starting to make plans for releasing my debut album.
