Interview | Redolent

With airplay on BBC Radio Scotland and Amazing Radio alongside numerous gigs across the central belt, Redolent rocketed into summer.

Releasing their new album ‘Juvenility’ in May, the Edinburgh four-piece were then announced to appear at this year’s T in the Park Festival.

Set for the T Break Stage, noted as a launchpad for acts including Biffy Clyro and The View, could Redolent be the next act to make their way up the festival circuit?

Following their recent album release, we caught up with Redolent to find out more about the band’s sound and summer plans.

For those who haven’t discovered Redolent, how would you describe your sound?

“Aesthetic and sentimental expression of juvenility” is what I always write when asked for a biog! At the moment, we’re playing songs I wrote between the ages of 14 and 19 so there’s plenty of twee and naivety but it’s all very honest and, I hope, endearing! Sonically we’re very guitary, I’m into intricacy, atmosphere and hooks and Andy’s percussion compliments that. In a situation in which a blanket term was needed, such as being asked “what type eh music dae yis play?” by an unmusical, seldom seen relative, I’d say… Indie?

Why did you decide to take the route of a concept album for your new release?

I didn’t really go into it with any kind of plan, like I said I started it when I was 14 so most of it’s pretty visceral, it’s just a collection of songs that are redolent of my juvenility. At one point after we’d demo’d most of it Robbie said to me “do you realise you’ve written a concept album?”, I hadn’t really thought about it until that point, it all happened really naturally, each song had an idea behind it that I knew I could attach something visual to. It just came out that way!

How did you go about the writing process for this? Did the image or song come first?

I think most of the album was written before I’d made up a rough plan of what the images would be, and we went out and took them after everything had been recorded.

What can we expect from the album release?

An audio-visual treat.

Are there any tracks in particular you feel stand out from the rest?

I change my mind a lot, but at the moment my favourite is ‘Pheromones’. I just feel like it’s really honest and straightforward, lyrically and musically and I love playing it live. I think everyone else prefers ‘Bucky’ because it’s less poppy, more like our newer stuff!

Do you have any plans for gigs in support of the release?

We’re playing T Break, which is a dream, and have a few things lined up in Edinburgh and Glasgow for the summer.

What are your plans for the rest of 2016?

We have a five song instrumental-ish EP and a second album pretty much written so we’ll be recording those at some point!
