Interview | Vanquish

Vanquish_pressshot1From cover songs on YouTube to touring the UK, Vanquish is a new UK girl band who have just released their debut single this week.

The four-piece band may only be aged 18 to 21, but they have already gained over 1 million views on YouTube twisting their own style into famous tracks.

From backing singing beginnings to studying music at college, the girls formed in the traditional way – answering adverts, attending auditions and proving their talent.

And it seems it was a winning formula as since July 2013, the girls have toured with the likes of Amelia Lily, Loveable Rogues, Blue and M.A.D.

Vanquish are currently on tour with Rebecca Ferguson across the UK.

We caught up with the newest girlband on the scene to find out more about their rise to fame and their plans for the future.

It’s been less than a year since you formed, did you ever expect your career to lift off so quickly?

A lot has happened in a really short time and we’ve met so many people and performed with some amazing bands. Our first gig was with Blue and I met Richie from 5Ive and now our first single ‘Damn’ is coming out.

How would you best describe your music for those who have yet to discover you?

It’s very poppy, but has an edge with just the right amount of fierce.

What can we expect from your debut single release?

Damn’ is a powerful pop anthem about being head over heels in love with someone. It’s good one to dance to.

If you could pick three artists you take inspiration from, who would they be?

There’s so many as a group we’re inspired by. If we had to pick three, let’s go for Katy Perry, Spice Girls and Little Mix.

How does it feel to finally become centre stage from years of hard work?

It’s such a good feeling and seeing people singing back the words to your songs is just surreal. We’ve always wanted to do it and now it’s happening. We’ve all worked hard on music and we’re so grateful to have the opportunity to do something we love and we just want to do it forever!

What is your favourite pop cover you have posted on YouTube?

All the songs we’ve covered are songs at least one of us loves, but we really enjoyed covering James Arthur and also Katy Perry’s ‘Roar’.

What is the biggest compliment you’ve received from a fan?

We have such amazing fans we get so many positive messages and support. What’s really great is when fans have said our music is helping them. I remember one in particular saying ‘thank you, you make me strong’.

You’ve performed many gigs to-date, are there any in particular that stand out for you?

The first one, because it was the first one and Blue were on before us at Bristol Pride. Middlesborough Pride was another good one. We were on at 1am but the crowd were buzzing. The M.A.D. tour was also brilliant – we just love performing live and meeting our fans. We can’t wait to get back out on tour with Rebecca Ferguson.

What would you say differentiates you from other girl bands on the music scene?

I think a lot of the girlbands are quite urban or dancey and although we have an edge to our songs it’s more of a traditional pop sound.

Do you have any band aims by the end of 2014?

We’d love to have a top 40 hit and hopefully have an EP out. Lots more performing and touring too.

Is there anything else you wish to add?

A big thank you to all our fans for their support. We really appreciate it!
