And the Giraffe

And the Giraffe is a project by two best friends Josh Morris and Nick Roberts. The band started when they first met during an orientation meeting for University and decided to get together to jam.

First playing acoustic folk songs and a few shows around the area, the band were then separated through moving and only used to internet to collaborate.

In Spring 2011, the duo were reunited and recorded their first EP in Nick’s apartment bedroom and have most recently released a music video for their single ‘Underground Love’, which was shot in Los Angeles on a budget of $0 with their good friend Harrison Sanborn.

Bored of the typical interview questions, we rustled up something a little different for And the Giraffe…

If you could nominate the band for any award, what would it be and why?

J: I kind of go back and forth on whether awards should ever be given out! I’m kind of in a phase where I don’t like them. I think everything should just be done well. Sorry to be somewhat dismissive with this one!
N: I think I’ll have to agree with Josh on this one. In general, I don’t think awards should be given out for how “good” one particular person’s art is compared to another’s. However, just for shits and giggles, I think GWAR should win an award called, “The band with the most creative costumes who have managed to keep their career going for longer than ever thought possible dressed like that.”

If you could perform absolutely anywhere, where about would you like to perform?

J: I’m really a studio and recording guy. I would love to play in Abbey Road, because of all the great music that was made and recorded there. The Beatles are my favorite band.
N: Radio City Music Hall. It’s a beautiful venue and sits about 6,000 people, which seems like a comfortable enough number of people to perform in front of and still have it feel like an intimate setting.

If you had the chance to rename the band, what would you be called?

J: I really like our current name, but I would love to form a punk rock band called The Novel Concepts.
N: I wouldn’t like to change the name to anything else, but I recently had the idea to form a joke Nickelback cover band called DimeFront. We’d be going on tour with HotStop, the area’s leading Coldplay cover band. It’d be a great show. Promise.

Who for you has been the most exciting artist/band you’ve discovered?

J: Recently, I’ve been doing some recording and mixing for various projects of my friends. That’s probably what I like the most lately, which is really a fortunate experience for me. I have the great fortune of meeting and getting to work with extremely talented people, Nick included. In terms of music in general, it goes The Beatles and then everything else.

N: Man, my tastes change too often to say that I have a most exciting discovery to name. Just recently though, I re-discovered an old love of mine: Sigur Ros. I was really into them a few years ago and recently put on one of their records to re-listen to them and I was just blown away. They’re a fantastic band. Ask us again next week and I’m sure we’ll have a different answer!

Using only adjectives, how would you describe the band?

J: detail oriented, smooth, surprising, loose.
N: sexy, quiet, grooving, melancholic.

How much wood would a woodchuck chuck, if a wood chuck could chuck wood?

J: No clue.
N: Woodchucks generally chuck dirt! But if the 35 cubic feet of dirt a woodchuck generally chucks during the course of a burrowing adventure were to be converted into wood terms, it’d be about 700 pounds. Fact.

If you could visit any place to record a music video, where would it be and why?

J: Probably New Zealand.
N: I’d never really thought about it. The world has a lot of beautiful places, it’s all just about finding beauty where you least expect it.

What can we expect from the band in 2012?

J: More music and touring, hopefully.
N: Exactly. We’re hoping for more music and hopefully a new EP or album in the coming months.
