Having written top 10 hits for The Wanted and Olly Murs and recently featuring on The Loveable Rogues’ debut release, Ed Drewett is no stranger to the songwriting business.

With the release of his debut single ‘Drunk Dial’ on March 10th and an album due for later this year, we had a chance to catch up with Ed.

For those who’ve never listened to your music, can you describe your sound?

Yes I can! It’s like classic, big songs, epic and melodic. Bang!

What can we expect from your forthcoming album release?

You can expect quite a big spectrum of songs, like some up-tempo bangers but then some more kind of organic tunes too, more kind of epic songs. There’s something for everyone, there’s stuff I wrote on it from day one and there are songs on there from the present day. It’s like a collection of my favourites, like a story of the past four years of being in the music industry.

Your new single ‘Drunk Dial’ is about getting drunk on a night out and calling up someone you shouldn’t. Who was the last person you drunk dialled?

I’ve drunk dialled a lot of people, I mainly just call up my lads. I just sing down the phone, tell them how much I love them, gotta show the lads some love!

You recently featured on Profressor Green’s ‘I Need You Tonight’, is there anyone else you’d love to collaborate with?

I’d love to collaborate with Chris Martin, and I’d love to collaborate with Sting too. Sting’s like my idol.

You’ve helped to write some very successful songs for Olly Murs and The Wanted, how did you first get into songwriting and are there any songs you wish you could’ve written instead?

Songwriting is something that I tried when I was 12, I just changed the lyrics over a melody, over an old Phil Collins song I think it was. In terms of songs that I’d liked to have written, probably that song from Aerosmith – ‘I Don’t Wanna Miss a Thing’. That song is f***ing incredible. I love that song, I wish I’d written that!

Awesome, keeping in with the theme of songwriting, do you have a favourite song that you’ve written so far?

Yeah I have, it’s called ‘Step In Time’. I don’t think anybody has heard it yet, but that is staying with me. It’s like a little jam.

Can we expect to hear it any time soon?

Yeah hopefully! I mean you should hear it this year definitely, probably in the third quarter when the album’s released. We might even release it as a single, who knows!

We look forward to hearing it! You recently mentioned that you’ve decided to hand pick your team and go independent. Can we expect a change in sound from this?

No, no change in sound. I’ve been lucky enough to always keep the sound that I’ve wanted throughout all the record label shenanigans. I’m just gonna carry on doing what I’m doing and writing music that I love. That’s all I’ve done so far, it’s good to be in the driving seat you know? Be able to do it myself, get to make decisions and just be like “this is what I want, this is what I don’t want, there you go.”

Final question to tie it all together, how much control do you now have over your releases compared to before?

I have 100% control which is great. Me and my manager literally just say what we like, pick a song that we love, a song that we think is good for a first single, second single, third single – that’s it. Straightforward. No having to go back to the record label and asking what they think of something. We love it, sorted. It’s how it should be I reckon!

Definitely agree with you on that!Thank you for your time and we look forward to hearing the album.

Thank you!
