New Young Pony Club

By Charlotte Stones

We caught up with New Young Pony Club’s lead vocalist Tahita ahead of their performance at this year’s Y Not festival.

So you spent the first half of this year touring with Katy Perry, what have you been up to since then?

Doing a lot of festivals and writing album 3 mainly and having a bit of a holiday!

What can fans expect from your third album?

More of the same you know, we’ve had the same kind of sound right the way through the albums. So we just want it to kind of progress and have fun at the same time. A little bit pop but you know, throwing more into the mix really.

When you were touring in Europe, did you notice any differences between the crowds? Are UK crowds better do you think?

UK crowds vary I would say. We’ve played in Yorkshire and they always say ‘ahh you know Yorkshire audiences are so warm’ and I was thinking ‘yeah, because you’re from Sheffield, maybe for you, but we’re southerners we’re from London, for us it’s a bit different’. They may as well be watching us do card tricks!

Do you have any tricks you’re going to do on stage?!

Not really!

Even if they’re an awkward crowd?

If you’ve got a really awkward crowd…well sometimes awkward crowds aren’t that awkward cos they hate you, sometimes it is because our music is quite sedacious and sexy and then you play that at reading at like 2 o’clock in the afternoon and it’s just seriously awkward. We should be playing this at 2 o’clock in the morning and you’re all stood there not drunk yet thinking ‘oh god I’m a little bit embarrassed, I don’t want to dance first’ So yeah, that’s an awkward crowd! There’s nothing you can really do about it!

Do you like playing to smaller crowds?

Yeah definitely! People seem to be less self-aware if they’re not at a festival, you know if you’re at a festival like Glastonbury or something you have to be looking cool all the time, wearing something no one else is wearing and covering yourself in mud. Smaller festivals tend to be more welcome, so it’s really exciting to play at Y Not!

Well the crowd here are all really welcoming in their fancy dress! Do you have a staple fancy dress outfit?

No actually, we’ve never really been much of a fancy dress band! We toured with Lily Allen and as part of her rider she’d have at least one fancy dress costume that she’d make her sound guy wear so that she could laugh at him. But yeah we don’t really do that! We should do!

What’s on your rider?

Dull stuff, just booze really and we used to have heat magazine, but we decided we’re too brainy for that!

If you could collaborate with any artist dead or alive who would it be?

Bowie!

What’s the weirdest fan experience you’ve had?

For me personally probably a load of guys crawling on stage in Paris to lick my feet

Wow, that’s weird! How did you react to that?!

I let them!

Have you been to see any bands here today?

No actually! There’s a band I really like called swimming, who I should be watching really but oh well!

Do you have any funny tour stories?

Ermmm I don’t, no!

They can be about the rest of the band..! (who at this time are not present!)

Haha, well I live by the motto if you can remember your tour then you didn’t have enough fun on it!
