Not Advised

Not Advised are gaining more popularity as the months go on, with raving reviews of their EP, a successful place at Slam Dunk Festival and their music video taking over the channels, it seems they are a band you will be hearing a lot more of in the future!

The band are signed to LAB Records and are currently in the process of writing their first album.

We caught up with Not Advised on their headline August tour, but since the interview we discovered a slight technical hitch, so it is online later than planned!

Enjoy!

What’s the thing you most look forward to about being on tour?

Jim: Playing shows, hanging out with the boys.

Andy: I agree with Jim, what I look forward to on tour is going out, playing shows and meeting people.

Greg: Seeing different cities, cause we turn up early you get to walk around and see other places apart from Southampton!

Jack: I think we’ve always seen ourselves as a live kind of band. We enjoy being in the studio, but live for us has always been our thing as we give quite a lot of energy on-stage, so tour is night after night doing the thing that’s the best thing about being in the band.

Ash: Not going home!

What’s your favourite song to play live?

Mine at the moment is ‘The Hope Killed The Hype’

I’ll jump on the bandwagon I think ‘The Hope Killed The Hype’ is quite a fun song to play live.

I was going to say The Winner, personally I really like the drivey-ness of the chorus!

Any of the new ones really, it’s really refreshing.

I think we are a band who doesn’t write songs necessarily quickly, we don’t churn out song after song after song then tour them so…

I thought you were going to say we don’t churn out hit after hit!

That either!!

So when we’ve got new songs, it’s nice to play nice them live cause we’ve been playing the other songs for so long. Not that we don’t enjoy the set, cause we really do but it’s a nice change playing new stuff and we can mix it about with the new songs, like we’ve added a little intro to ‘The Hope Killed The Hype’ so it’s nice to do something we haven’t before.

It’s nice to feel like Brand New for like thirty seconds!

Who’s been the best band you’ve been on tour with so far?

I would say You Me At Six, the guys are really awesome and we’ve had some really fun times with them.

They have the whole package, everything about that tour you really couldn’t get better!

There isn’t anyone we really hate, we can get along with anyone. No ones an idiot. If you’re an idiot in this kind of industry, you’re not going to get anywhere because no one wants to play with you and no one wants to hang out with you, so how far are you going to get? So everyone’s really cool!

The thing was with the You Me At Six tour was that even if those guys never spoke to us and we didn’t become friends with them at all, it would’ve been a great tour. There was an awesome crowd, who were always up for it, it was sold out and it’s the right kind of crowd for us. That tour was so good because there was all that stuff and then they were our friends anyway and we became better friends and we got to know each other better. For example, Josh would come out and sing with us on a song and it was a really good experience, that was an awesome time but we don’t see them a lot cause they are away touring!

Who would be your dream band to tour with if there where no limits and why?

In Unison: Michael Jackson

Lady Gaga!

Elvis.

Supported by Hanson..

Hanson on first, then Phil Collins.

Sum 41.

Elvis Presley..it’s an all day festival!

Blink would have to be on the bill!

Us, Elvis, Gaga, Hanson, Sum, MJ and Blink headlining, Where would we put ourselves on the bill?

Main support!

If we were putting the show on we’d be main support, if someone else was where would we go?

Where would we go?! Well I think Michael Jackson would be above us, I reckon Phil Collins maybe as well, I think GaGa is a little bit bigger than us, she’s probably doing slightly bigger rooms than we are doing upstairs!

We’ve just demoralised ourselves!

We could at least go on second…Hanson on first, they’ve only got one good song!

If someone hadn’t heard the band and you had to urge them to listen to one song of your own, what would it be and why?

Majority: Right Now

When it came out people started taking us a bit more seriously, it was a turning point in our song writing career as I would say!

We wrote that song, recorded and released it, and it went down really well. It was a point I realised we can write a good song!

I just think that song is a good song to explain what we are about. It was the first time we thought about the lyrics and the structure of the song and we still enjoy playing that song now, despite it’s the probably the oldest song in the set!

Are you looking forward to the upcoming dates with Canterbury?

All: Yeah!

I think they are going to be really good.

We don’t really know those boys as well as we know other bands, so it will be nice to make friends and Francesqa as well, I think it’s going to be an awesome tour. The shows are going to be good.

Hopefully they will be busy so that’s a plus. The other two bands are really good as well, so we will definitely need to practice before it!

The tour’s quite regional, where as this tours hit major cities, the Canterbury tour does do some major cities but also does places like Norwich and Exeter, which we haven’t been to for a while or haven’t been to before. It’ll be nice and refreshing to go to those towns, but not headlining so we won’t feel as much pressure!

Andy: Where am I spending my birthday this year?

I think we are in Oxford mate!

I thought it was Coventry?!

Basically pretty much every year Andy spends his birthday, well for the past four years, Andy spends his birthday not at home in a really random place as well

Somewhere random, doing something stupid!

Is there any cities you’ve not been to that you want to go to?

Most: Liverpool!

San Diego, California

I should have said in the UK!

Liverpool’s the main big city we’ve never played!

I would like to go to York…

We’ve been to York!! That’s the time the promoter promised a bus load of people…

Oh yeah, let’s pretend that never happened! We’ve never played York, I want to go to York!

Out of the major ones Liverpool is the one we’ve not played…

We went to Liverpool once, went round The Beatles museum, set up for the show, did an interview then as soon as the interview was finished it was like ‘The shows been cancelled!’.

We were like “Oh, we will go home then…”

At least we know this one’s going to happen!

What can we expect from ‘Not Advised’ in the future?

An album

Liverpool, York!

We are going to Liverpool and York on the next tour!

In all seriousness, we’ve got as you said the tour with Canterbury in October, we’re looking at some tours for September/November as well. We are going to Europe for the first time in December. We don’t have an album yet, as we are just starting to write our album now, so we will be writing and demoing our album at the end of the year and that’s going to come out next year. We’re going to keep touring, we’re going to release ‘Right Now’ in about a months time with a new video and then we are going to release a further single before the next tour. We are planning our next headline tour at the moment which will be in February 2011, which is basically everything we’ve done on this tour but twice as big. We will try and get more production for what we can and play a longer set.

And hope for more people!
