Introducing | Evawolf

London two-piece Evawolf have already managed to impress us with the release of their debut tracks.

The duo formed in late 2014 and recently performed their debut show at The Sebright Arms.

Following the release of their new track ‘When The Truth Is Out’, we caught up with the guys to find out more about the band.

Can you tell us more about the band formation?

James and I first met when we were about 10 years old, growing up as we did in Walthamstow in East London.
We have been playing together and in bands ever since. We decided to form Evawolf in late 2014, with the intent of making songs that represented a love of post-rock and blues.

Where did the name ‘Evawolf’ come from?
The name came about, as all good things do; from a historical reference. Back in 839AD, Wessex was ruled by an Anglo-Saxon King called Æthelwulf which in Old English means ‘Noble Wolf’. Our families have strong ties to the South West, and so we thought it would be good to reference this. We brought the name up to date a little though: it was difficult enough to find that ‘Æ’ key just now!

How would you describe your music?

As a two-piece, sonic aesthetic is dependent on contrasting minimalism and fuller sound dynamics, so we like bands like London Grammar and The XX for the sparser elements, and grunge-ier sounds from bands like Nirvana and The Smashing Pumpkins for our heavier outbursts. On top of this, we love our Skip James, Elvis Presley, and of course; Howlin’ Wolf. We like to apply a considerable amount of bluesy emotion to our lyrics and guitar style.

In terms of a live set, what can we expect?

Live sets as a two-piece mean you need to be very aware of dynamics and timbre. Guitar that echoes and hangs in the air is good for this, and using the drums as a tonal instrument rather than a source of filler and drive is important too. Sometimes it’s great just to pull everything back and work with the bare bones of a song. We do/will consider using other instrumentalists for our live shows if/when necessary.

What do you guys have planned for 2015?

2015 has been great to us so far: we had a fantastic turnout to our debut live show and a great response to our initial demo releases too. We are keen to get some new recordings down soon. We plan to play a handful of festivals this summer and we are also looking to create a nice new video too. We are ultimately looking to create the best possible introduction this year and make sure we create some lasting impressions.
