Introducing | Fours

Following the release of their debut EP, we caught up with Fours.

The London-based indie four-piece released ‘Everything I Said’ on September 4th via Spinnup.

Consisting of Edith Violet on vocals, Dan Smith on guitar, bassist Jezza Wells and drummer Luke, FOURS influences blend across genres from Foals and Bloc Party to Ellie Goulding and Amy Winehouse.

From their formation to their live sets, we caught up with the band.

Can you tell us more about the formation of FOURS?

Edith: Me and Dan go way back. I met him while he was recording an acoustic session for my band in Kingston. After the recording, he offered to start working with me on my songs so I quit my then band and we decided to form a new group. I met Luke after asking around about drummers and loved him straight away. We couldn’t find a bass player so Luke brought along Jezza, his then flatmate. I clocked his red Converse so I knew right away that he was trouble.

Which bands/artists influence your music the most?

Dan: From a guitar perspective, I’m definitely influenced by the likes of Lindsey Buckingham and Andy Summers (Fleetwood Mac & The Police) and more recent artists like The 1975 and Foals.

Jezza: Blending 90s funk with 00’s pop, artists such as JQY, Bloc Party, Ellie Goulding.

Luke: Drums are influenced by Ellie Goulding (Joe Clegg) and The 1975 (George Daniel).

Edith: I always wanted to be like Debbie Harrie with a band. I always listened to soul singers growing up like Amy Winehouse, Nina Simone and Arethra Franklin.

You recently released your debut EP at the start of this month, how did you go about the recording process for the EP?

Jezza: We locked ourselves in a studio in Sussex where we wrote and recorded a demo for ‘Leave Me’. We stumbled across the sound that formed FOURS here.

Dan: We worked on 5/6 new demos from this point and ended up spending a long time cutting up and sculpting the three songs we’ve released in demo form. We took them to a studio in Bermondsey and worked with a fantastic producer who helped to develop our sound further.

Which track would you recommend readers check out first?

Jezza: I think ‘Leave Me‘ is a great place to start, it’s where it all began.

Luke: FOURS was developed from ‘Leave Me’ so it makes sense to start there!

What can we expect from a live set from FOURS?

Edith: You can expect energy and a lot of dancing. We like to have a lot of fun when we play live!

Luke: You’re supposed to leave our gig with our chorus’ in your head and sore feet!

What do you have planned for the rest of the year?

Jezza: We have a couple more gigs lined up and we are working on a new single that we’re looking to release early next year.

Edith: Hopefully I can quit my day job!

Anything else you wish to add?

Jezza: Winter is coming!
