Introducing | Future Talk

Following the release of their debut EP, we caught up with Future Talk.

Born out of past projects in the early stages of 2014, the Gloucestershire four-piece released their EP ‘The Path That Sadness Paved’ on August 24th.

Working with Romesh Dodangoda (Funeral For a Friend, The Blackout) at Longwave Studios for their debut release, we caught up with the band to find out more about the EP and their plans for 2015.

How did you go about the recording process for the EP?

We spent about three months recording a silly amount of demos, before deciding on the final track-listing literally a matter of days before we began tracking. We then headed to Cardiff for five days to record what everyone gets to hear now.

How was it working with Romesh Dodangoda in the studio?

It was a fantastic experience for all of us. Romesh has produced a large amount of the British bands that have influenced us over the years so having the chance to work with him on our debut release was an honour. He’s amazing at what he does and an incredibly down to earth, welcoming guy! The EP sounds exactly how we’d envisaged thanks to Romesh.

Did you find it easy selecting the final tracks for the release?

Truthfully, no. We’d written about five songs before we actually landed on one that we all we certain on, which was ‘The Cliffs As A Reminder’. The next to follow was ‘Fear Life’, but the lyrics and vocals to that song were still being finished as we were tracking it on the last day. We were just so confident with the instrumental that we knew it needed to be there. ‘Sleeping Pills’ came probably three weeks before we were scheduled to start tracking and we knew from the minute we finished demoing the vocals that it’d end up as the single. Following ‘Sleeping Pills’, we probably wrote another five songs in two weeks trying to land the final song that we needed, but nothing was doing it for us. We had five days left to come up with something that was ‘us’ and then, thankfully, ‘Shadow Poet’ came. We finished writing vocals for it at 4am the day before we left for Cardiff.

Which track would you recommend our readers should check out first?

Our single, ‘Sleeping Pills’ encapsulates everything we that the EP has to say, so we’d have to say that one. Instrumentally and lyrically it covers everything.

Through your live sets, have any EP tracks become favourites to play live?

Every member would probably have a different answer for you, but we all enjoy playing ‘The Cliffs As A Reminder’ live, just because it’s the easiest to play so we don’t have to concentrate as much…

What are your plans for the rest of 2015?

We’re trying to get out onto the live circuit as much as possible to support the EP release. We’re in talks with a few tour companies now so hopefully we’ll have some cool shows to announce soon!

Anything else you wish to add?

A massive thank you to everyone that has backed us so far. Every comment, message, share and purchase is appreciated more than you know. We hope that ‘The Path That Sadness Paved’ ends up meaning as much to you guys as it does to us. Keep on keeping on.
