Introducing | Gallery Circus

With forthcoming slots at festivals including The Great Escape in Brighton and Sound City in Liverpool, Twin Brothers Gallery Circus are gearing up for the release of their new EP ‘Chi-Town Dogs’.

Adapting their name from the ‘Gallery Cabaret’ in Chicago’s Logan Square, Gallery Circus was brought to life at an open mic party spot after the brothers decided to move to the USA and befriend the DIY punk scene.

After a year of gigging in America, they returned to the UK for their debut single release and last year secured festival slots including Glastonbury, Kendal Calling and Y-Not.

As the duo is now preparing to release their new EP, we caught up with the twin rockers to find out more about the band.

Why did you guys decide to start a band together?

When we were 5 years old, we watched a Top Of The Pops ‘Brit pop special’ and knew we needed to form a band!

What was it that instigated your move to America?

The British weather – and we wanted to try and visit as many college party towns as we could to see if the ‘American Pie’ films have been lying to us. They’re haven’t.

What do you feel is the main difference between the UK and US music scene?

US crowds as a generalisation are more receptive to a band they do not know – which can make it easier if you’re the support for a show. However, every support tour we have done so far in the UK has been great – the crowds have always been really receptive and encouraging.

For those who haven’t heard your music, how would you describe the Gallery Circus sound?

Untamed, angsty and relentless; dripping in sweat.

Can you tell us more about your forthcoming EP release ‘Chi-Town Dogs’?

Our new EP has been a long time in the making! We recorded it over last summer and it definitely represents how we’ve grown and taken shape over the past couple years of gigging a fair bit. We still love big riffs and interesting melodies, but we’ve shed some of our bluesier skin.

The title track from the EP: ‘Chi-Town Dogs’ showcases a lot of piano, something we’ve brought into the live set recently as we’re always striving to create more sound than you think two people are capable of.

All four tracks re-tell crazy stories we’ve experienced over the years as twins living in the states and the UK – from accidentally burning buildings down; escaping the Chicago police department on rooftops to breaking out of a smoke-filled building in Stoke.

How was it working with Dan Austin for the release? Had you followed his work before now?

Working with Dan was awesome! He was all-go 100% of the time and had a great ear for tones. We recorded in a studio near Manchester which was an old vicarage and hopefully we added some of its charm to the recordings. Yeah, we are both huge fans of some of the albums he’s worked on and produced – we knew that he would nail our sound!

In terms of your live sets, what can we expect from your headline tour?

We feel that from tour to tour, our live show has gotten more intense and energetic. It can be physically draining at times, especially for Graeme, but we have the mentality that you once you’re on stage you have to give it everything you got. It’s almost like a competition amongst ourselves as to who can push themselves the furthest.

Anything else you wish to add?

We’re excited for people to hear the track ‘Holland On Fire’ – it’s our new single and tells the story of when we were living in Chicago a few years back when a building we were partying in went up in flames on July 4th. A small amount of dynamite was involved… It’s been a while since we released new music and we can’t wait to get our EP out in the wild.
