Introducing | Jack Woodward

Following the release of his debut track ‘Honey’, we caught up with Jack Woodward.

Starting his journey in musicals at school, Jack has since found himself living in some of the music capitals of the UK.

Last year, he studied and lived in Glasgow with gigs at venues including Nice n Sleazy and King Tut’s while 2016 has seen the singer move back to his hometown Manchester, with appearances at Night and Day and Fallow Cafe.

While he is working away on his debut EP ‘Fly Away’, we chatted with Jack to find out more about his musical influences, EP release and plans for 2016.

Can you tell us how you first got into music?

I first got into music at primary school when I was 10 by playing the part of Buddy Holly in a Buddy Holly play and singing his songs, then I went on to do more musical theatre at high school playing Oliver in Oliver and Anthony in Sweeney Todd.

Which bands/artists do you take the most influence from?

Bands and artists that influence me the most are The Killers (Brandon Flowers), Bruce Springsteen, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Paolo Nutini, John Mayer and Foo Fighters in pretty much that order.

How would you describe your ‘sound’ for those who have yet to discover your tracks?

I would describe my sound as singer-songwriter pop/rock

Last year, you spent time studying in Glasgow, did you find that your time there influenced your music at all?

I was exposed to a lot of different and inspiring music in Glasgow last year which certainly pushed me to raise my game and motivate me to do more songwriting. I practiced with a band for a few months and although we never played any live gigs, it made me evolve some of my songs into more of a band sound such as with ‘Honey’.

You’re currently working on your debut EP, what can we expect from the release?

I have so far recorded two songs from the EP and I will be recording the second half next month. I want the EP to show both sides of my songwriting. Joyous and passionate songs contrasted with intimate and chilled out emotions. The title track ‘Fly Away’ is certainly a more chilled, relaxed and intimate song than my first release ‘Honey‘ so I look forward to showcasing that.

What are your plans for the rest of 2016?

I have a lot of exciting gigs and festivals coming up in the next couple of months (June and July) playing events in Glasgow, Manchester, Liverpool and the Lake District, alongside finishing and releasing my EP making 2016 my most exciting year yet!

Anything else you wish to add?

I’m very grateful to have the chance to give my music a shot and really focus on writing the best music that I can and playing to new people every day. Every little helps and I appreciate all the help I’ve had so far. I really want to give my gift and I hope that people keep receiving it in a positive way.
