Introducing | Josh Newell-Brown

We caught up with Josh Newell-Brown following the release of his debut EP.

Hailing from the seaside town of Saltburn, the folk-pop singer became hooked on music thanks to his friends and has been recently released his debut EP.

For the release and his forthcoming live shows, Josh decided to use his talent to raise funds for charity Dreams Come True, which works to bring joy to seriously ill children and young people across the country by making their dreams come true.

From his own inspirations to making others dreams come true, we caught up with Josh to find out more.

Can you tell us how you first got into music?

My Mam has always been musical, she can play guitar and piano very well, she definitely has some influence on me. I always tried picking up the guitar, but hated the fact my fingers were never big enough. So, I learnt the piano (badly) instead which didn’t last long at all. I was lucky enough to make friends with talented musicians in school, who actually inspired me to pick up music.

What artists/bands inspire your sound?

I’ve always been a fan of Marvin Gaye and Finley Quaye they are biggies for inspiration! So much soul. Ben Howard, John Mayer and Ben Harper are also massive inspirations.

How would you describe your debut EP release?

The release is something really exciting and fresh, it’s something I’ve wanted people to hear for a few months now and it’s finally here. It’s like your mam buying you something new for your packed lunch when you’re like 10!

Why did you decide to dedicate the EP release to Dreams Come True?

I straight away knew that when I released my debut EP I wanted to donate all proceeds to a charity! I knew I wanted it to link in with seriously and terminally ill children and wanted to help in a way that my music could benefit others. From the first time I came into contact with the charity, I was hooked on the cause.

Are there any forthcoming live dates you’re looking forward to?

I really want to play a gig in London. There’s a live date I’m really really excited for in October, but it’s all under wraps at the moment!

Which venue in the UK would you most like to headline?

The Royal Albert Hall would be pretty impressive. I also love the Sage in Newcastle it’s such an awesome building!

What are your hopes for 2015?

My hopes are to play plenty of live gigs with my band, keep up the writing, and head back into the studio to create and build. I also hope that I raise many funds for Dreams Come True, and can raise as much awareness as possible.
