Introducing | Left In The Wake

It’s been three years since Left In The Wake established their five-piece band.

The metalcore group has since toured around Spain, recorded various releases and worked with producer Alex Cappa.

The band consists of:
Damon Lumley (Vocals)
Daniel Pamplona (Guitar)
Carlos Olcina (Guitar)
Angel de la Pena (Bass)
Hans Callejas (Drums)

We caught up with them to allow the band to introduce themselves to you.

Can you tell us more about how you formed?

Well I moved to Madrid from the UK in 2007 for work reasons and left my old band behind me. All musicians get that itch to carry on doing something musical so I started searching for bands. I searched online for metal bands looking for members and it was immediately obvious that there was a shortage of singers in the metal scene so I thought I’d try my hand at vocals. That was it – basically we just started writing and shaping our sound etc.

How would you best describe the band’s sound?

Kinda clean melodic hardcore with a gritty edge. We don’t really stick to any genres though so it’s hard to put a label on it.

Which of your tracks should our readers check out first?

I would say the opening track “The Banner We Follow”. Musically and lyrically it sets you up with what to expect for the rest of the album, even though there are very different sounding tracks throughout, there’s always the trend of all the guitars playing strangely fitting harmonies and melodies. The lyrics are from a positive place (on the most part) and the drums being metal with jazz influence, so it’s all a bit crazy. Check out also “Glisten and Gleam” and “3500 killermetres

Out of all of the shows you have performed, are there any stand out dates?

It’s been about 46 dates now I think, we’ve been touring recently but the stand out dates for me were the homecoming date after our summer tour. We had rum on the stage for anyone who wanted it, I ended up almost naked because all my clothes were destroyed from the previous dates and it was amazing seeing all our friends there welcoming us home, it was really hectic but it was one of the best nights of my life.

You’ve tackled Spain’s underground scene – are there any UK venues you are desperate to play?

I’m trying to think of the ones that are still about, I’ve lived in Madrid for 7 years so when I was going to gigs in England they were at the Underworld, the Pyramid Centre in Portsmouth, Facebar in reading, and the LA 2 which died sadly, but all of those venues are amazing and I’d love to play any of them. Currently we’re booking gigs in the UK starting in Manchester and moving down south so I’ll get to check out some new UK venues on our travels.

Are there any stand out tracks from your recent album we should check out?

We’ve been playing 9 tracks from the album on tour recently which sounds a lot, but the album in its entirety is only 37 minutes long so it’s doable. The crowds have been more responsive to “The Banner We Follow” (obviously) “Glisten and Gleam”, “3500 ” and Unscathed, we play a slightly different version live which is a bit more epic than the recorded version.

What are your plans for the rest of 2014?

Playing all over the place, anyone who wants us there, we’ll be there to promote the album. We’re looking to get a video done fairly soon for an album track and we’re in talks with a couple of festivals too.
We’re in the UK from August the 8th to 18th and apart from that, I imagine we’ll be writing some new stuff when we get time and continue to push ourselves to see what we can achieve!

Anything else you wish to add?

I think I have said it all really, if we’re passing through your area in August, come check us out. You can download the album for free via our Facebook page and if you like it, we have merch and all that stuff on big cartel that we ship from here. We’re really excited to be back in the UK and we hope to see some of your readers there! Oh and come talk to us, we love chatting to people, we’re not one of them “cool” bands that sit back stage, play and leave.
