Introducing | Many Things

With their debut album due for release this summer and a recent change in line-up, we caught up with indie trio Many Things.

Frontman Michael Tomlinson told us more about more about their music, top gigs and the future plans for the London band.

Can you tell us about the formation of Many Things?

I met Macks (Drums) at the Premises when he was pressing charges against the Irish Times for defamation. These kind of extraordinary pursuits have been going on for as long as I’ve known him. He introduced me to Gabi (Keys) & Fred and that was us. We recently became a three-piece. While it was sad to see FTB (Frederik Tyson-Brown) go it’s been really positive and has become another step in the evolution of our sound. It’s an exciting time.

How would you describe your music for those who haven’t discovered the band yet?

In these times, I’d call it alternative music – it’s some where between the Flaming Lips, The Strokes & Bruce Springsteen. It’s smart and simple at the same time and there is always a song at the core of each composition. You can enjoy whether your listening by yourself at home or at a house party. That’s just my opinion though – I’m slightly biased.

Are there any tracks in particular you’d recommend those new to your music should check out first

‘Paranoid People Meet Me in The Middle’ and our next single ‘Burn Together’. That’s the kind of spectrum that our album covers.

Out of all your live shows to-date, are there any in particular that stand out?

We just had our single launch for ‘Holy Fire’ at the Lexington. That was wicked! It was a thrill to headline it and have so many people come out in support. Plus it was our first show back in London after our European tour supporting Is Tropical. That whole tour springs to my mind as a highlight – it was our first outing as a three-piece and a tour I think we really stepped up. We were all travelling in this motor home style vehicle, we’d fall asleep in one country and wake up in another having no idea what language we should attempt to speak. There was an amazing camaraderie between everyone on that bus and each night we got progressively deeper into this rhythm where performance became so natural.

In terms of future gigs, which venue in the UK would you most like to headline?

That’s a hard question to answer. I will say though, we like to play where our audience takes us. If it’s the Lexington one month or Shepherd’s Bush Empire the next, we’re happy to be connected to our audience.

What do you have planned for the rest of 2015?

Our album comes out on August 10th so our whole year is building around that. We’ve got a lot of stuff that we’re about to announce but it’s all hush-hush.

Anything else you wish to add?

So many things, but I think it’s all said most eloquently on record. Here’s a link to our EP https://soundcloud.com/mtmanythings/sets/what-we-are
