Introducing | Mathew V

Ahead of the release of his new album ‘Sounds’, we caught up with Mathew V.

Stepping away from the stereotypical to craft his signature sound, the Vancouver artist set about working on his forthcoming album release ‘Sounds’.

Revealing the first track ‘No Bad News’ via Spotify, we caught up with Mathew ahead of his album release to find out more about his musical journey.

Can you tell us about how you first got into music?

I started singing Shania Twain songs around the house when I was a toddler. My parents noticed my passion for music and put me into classical voice and opera training all throughout my childhood (potentially to stray from the Shania Twain… jury is still out on that one.) When I was 17 I moved to London England to find my sound, and to develop as a writer.

Which artists/bands would you cite as your strongest musical influences?

I listen to so much music and feel inspired quite often. In terms of music that I draw from while I was writing this record…. I’d have to say Amy Winehouse, Adele, Paloma Faith and Emeli Sande.

What was it that made you decide to take the step towards making the music you wanted to rather than conforming to the ‘standard’ sound?

I was just noticing that my attempts at bubblegum pop music were pretty transparent. I was feeling inauthentic in my expression (forgive my artsy fartsy lingo) and I figured that now, at 19 years old, there is no better time to debut as my authentic self.

How do you go about the writing process for your tracks?
I like to always be very aware of my emotions. Itemise them and write notes down as they arise, wwhether they are song titles or lyrics. I find myself getting most of my sonic ideas in public, and having to hum a voice note into my phone. Finally, when I sit down in solitude to write… I put the puzzle pieces together.

Can you describe your music for those who haven’t discovered it yet?

I would describe my music as modern soul. Very vocally focused. Pulling inspirations from pop and soul music as well as gospel vocalists. My lyrical content is blunt and upfront. Lots of the content from the record is very vulnerable for me as well, but that side has yet to be shown.

How did it feel previewing your first track and did you expect the reception it received?

I tried my very best not to expect anything. The best thing about this release being very honest, is that whether people love it or hate it, it is authentically me. With that being said… the feedback has been very positive and I’m excited to show growth and open up more as more of the songs come out.

What can we expect from your forthcoming album release ‘Sounds’?

Ahhh ‘Sounds’ – my child haha! You can expect a boy singing his ass off about the insecurity and vulnerability he has faced up to this point in his life. You can expect some big harmonies, some innovation, and some intimacy as well.

What are your plans for the rest of 2016?

For the rest of 2016 I plan to keep the momentum up and keep the songs coming! I plan to continue working on my voice, growing as an artist, playing shows, and reminding myself how much I love music.

Anything else you wish to add?

Thanks for making the time to chat with me! It’s always a pleasure to chat with fellow music lovers, and I appreciate you giving me the platform! Cheers.
