Introducing | Mt. Doubt

Just over one year ago, Leo Bargery began a new musical venture creating Mt. Doubt.

Since then, Mt. Doubt have released three singles and a debut album ‘My Past Is A Quiet Beast’.

Self released in May 2015, the album was produced by Mark Morrow and recorded in Leo’s hometown of Edinburgh.

Following the release of his album and with 2016 plans stacking up, we caught up with Leo to find out more about Mt. Doubt.

For those who haven’t discovered your music, how would you describe Mt. Doubt?

Mt Doubt is a one-man Alt-Rock and Dark-Pop project from Edinburgh, writing sad songs that sometimes have catchy choruses…

Can you tell us more about the writing process for your debut album?

All of the songs were just written by me in my bedroom on an unplugged electric guitar. I’ve never considered myself a ‘guitarist’ really so that’s always come second to the lyrical side of my song-writing. I don’t think I’ve ever sat down with the intention of writing a song, I just collect little ideas here and there and eventually they seem to scramble together and occasionally form the basis of a half-decent pop song. It was only after I’d written the whole album I started seeing thematic trends and things like that, it was all just a big mistake really.

Was it important for you to record the album in your hometown?

To be totally honest, I didn’t really think about it at the time I was just so desperate to record an album! Looking back now though, I’d say the importance is really in the people. I worked closely with an Edinburgh-based friend and producer Mark Morrow who has been a massive part of Mt. Doubt’s formative moments and if it wasn’t for our shared hometown our creative paths would likely never have crossed! That said I love Edinburgh and to be part of its flourishing music scene alongside up and coming bands like Indigo Velvet, Rebel Westerns and Bronston (the list goes on) is great!

Which track should our readers check out if they haven’t discovered your music before?

Everybody likes different things so it’s a tricky question, our debut single ‘Feathers’ is probably a decent place to start… That said, our latest single ‘Soak’ is probably my favourite of our released tracks to date so you could always start there and work backwards!

What can we expect from a live set from Mt. Doubt?

I’m fortunate enough to have a bunch of very talented friends who have become part of Mt. Doubt and helped me bring all the things in my head to life when I play live so it’s not a one-man show by any means; it’ll be energetic, loud (then quiet, then loud) probably very sweaty and there will be minimal stage chat…

What are your plans for 2016?

We’ll be playing a lot more shows and hopefully a bunch of festivals in the summer having already confirmed that we will be playing at this year’s ButeFest. We’ll also be aiming to go out on tour at some point to keep spreading the word far and wide about Mt Doubt. There’s lots of new music to come too, there will be an album out later in the year and a single to keep a look out for!
