Introducing | Scarlet

Scarlet Billham ventured on a musical journey at a young age.

Learning piano at just six years old and writing her first song at the age of 14, Scarlet self-taught herself guitar, before becoming classically trained in singing and piano.

In 2012, Scarlet graduated from BRIT School and is now following the footsteps of fellow alumni including Adele, Amy Winehouse and Katy B.

With the release of her new single ‘X’ and ahead of her slot at The Secret Garden Party, we caught up with Scarlet to find out more.

Can you tell us more about how you first began your musical journey?

My musical journey began when I was six and started learning how to play piano. My house has always been full of music, my mum loved 90s R’n’B and my dad loved bands like The Beatles and the old crooners. I guess something just clicked in me.

Did you always know you wanted a career in music?

I always felt my calling was in music, whether it would be as a singer, session singer, writer or on the business side of things. Every aspect of music fascinates me, I always felt most comfortable performing/writing. I was always encouraged to follow what I wanted to do.

How did it feel attending BRIT school?

Attending BRIT was a privilege. It was such a fantastic stepping stone for me. I really learnt how to hone my craft there. My confidence grew and again was encouraged to do what I wanted to do, and encouraged to write and try different things.

What is the one lesson you’ll never forget from your time there?

My head of music used to tell us: “be the best version of you that you can be”.

In terms of your solo material, how do you approach the songwriting process?

All of my solo material comes from personal experiences. Sometimes I will have an idea that I want to build on, or sometimes the music itself will inform me, but everything I write is from a personal experience I have been through or gone through with someone.

What can our listeners expect from your music for those who haven’t heard a track yet?

They can expect a raw, truthful sound. I write songs that everyone can relate to in their own ways.

What are your plans for the rest of 2016?

I am writing new material as we speak! Watch this space!
