Introducing | Shadow of Whales

It’s the aim of Austin alternative indie-pop band Shadow of Whales to inspire others to go out and achieve their dreams.

From a simple Tweet to a fan to the power of their songs, the band has encouraged their fans to embrace positivity and dedication.

As the band prepare to release their self-titled EP via INgrooves/Fontana, we caught up with bassist Jeremy Boyum.

How did you guys get together?

All the band mates were connected to Josh in one way or another. It was really a miraculous turn of events that all of us were looking for a project exactly like this to give ourselves too and Josh had the foresight ability to handpick musicians that would be a good fit.

How did you select the name Shadow of Whales?

JD had this dream a while back that he was walking through the city in the afternoon when a shadow came over him. He looked in the sky to see giant whales floating through the sky, one of which had blotted out the sun. As insane as it was, JD says it was the most humbling feeling he has ever had; to be in the presence of such giant, gentle, powerful creatures and be in their shadow. When he woke up he wrote a poem about it and titled it “Shadow of Whales”. Years later we formed a band and it fit so here we are!

Which track would you recommend our readers check out if stumbling across your music for the first time?

I’d say our first single “Dream” because it speaks the most to who we are, what we are doing and what we want to do. It’s the most sing-along like track we have for sure. If you’d rather a love ballad, “Forever” or if you’re looking to rock, “Just A Little”

Where did the inspiration for ‘Dream’ come from?

Dream came from what we want to be and what we want to do. One of our biggest goals is to encourage others to follow their dreams through a personal connection, whether it’s at a concert or on Twitter. We are whole-heartedly chasing after our dreams and if we can do it and we can make it, we hope it can encourage others to go after their dreams. We want to bring everyone along with us in hopes that they will be encouraged by our hard-work, dedication and positive vibes.

What is your dream as a band?

This was kind of answered in the last question, but essentially what we want to do is encourage people. Not just to follow their dreams, but in general. There are so many hurting people all over the world and not enough people caring. We know that we are only five guys but we hope that as our fans/friends go along with us on this journey that they will also care for others and encourage people to keep going when the rest of the world tells them to quit. We feel that emotions and actions are infectious, our hope is that if we love, care and encourage enough people it will spread like wildfire across the Earth. Another big goal is to continue to grow as musicians and as a band. We’d like to be touring a lot more next year, we want to release more music and we want to connect with more people and encourage them and make more friends.

Do you have any plans to visit the UK?

It’s not in the immediate plans, but it is definitely something we want to do as soon as humanely possible!

As it’s festival season, if you had to select one music festival to perform at – where would it be and why?

In the US – Warped Tour. We have all grown up going to warped and it would be an honor to play that festival.
In the UK – either Download festival or Reading and Leeds festival. That would be a dream come true.

What are your plans for the rest of 2014?

We are releasing our EP in August, playing quite a few shows and planning a tour for 2015. Those are the biggest things. Hopefully we will have time later in the year to begin recording new music to release in 2015 as well.

Anything else you wish to add?

Thanks to everyone out there who has been supporting us, you guys have no idea how much it means. We hope to continue making you guys proud! Check out Love Music; Love Life cause their awesome and if you love either of the things in the name than it’s worth checking out!
