Introducing | The King’s Parade

Following the release of their new single ‘Gathering the Pieces of a Broken Heart’, we caught up with The King’s Parade.

Since forming in 2012, The King’s Parade have released their debut EP, sold out shows across Europe and received support from the likes of BBC Radio 2  – not bad for a band who began their musical adventure on a Hawaiian cruise liner.

Within one listen of their new single release, we had to grab a chat with the guys to find out their music and plans for the year ahead.

Can you tell us more about the formation of The King’s Parade?

After briefly meeting at the end of university, we decided to save some money by working as a house band on a Hawaiian cruise liner. The plan was to save enough to move to London and share a house together, allowing us to focus on developing our own music. Luckily, we managed to do this and still live there now.

Have you found your musical direction has changed over the last four years? If so, how did this change come around?

The direction has evolved quite a lot since our first year in London. I think it’s changed because our tastes have changed. Our playing has gotten better and every new song feels like a step forward.

How would you describe your sound for those who may not have discovered you yet?

Our sound has always been a complicated thing to explain and pin down. The way I’d describe it is alt-pop with elements of soul and blues – that’s the short version!

Which bands/artists are you listening to right now?

The other night I went to see Nao at the Village Underground – she was amazing. We listen to all kinds of music but at the moment, I’d say we’ve got Alabama Shakes, Anderson .Paak, Michael Kiwanuka and Tame Impala on repeat!

If you could tour with any band this summer, who would it be and why?

I still think we would be the perfect support for Alabama Shakes. ‘Sound and Color’ is unanimously in our top 5 albums of the last few years and we’ve been to see them live about three times. Very much up our street!

Do you have any plans to hit the road this year?

We’ll be going back to Germany for the fifth time in July. We’ve been on support tours with a few bands over there and now we’ll heading back for our own headline tour. One of the dates is the headline slot at a festival which will be a first for us.

What do you have lined up for the rest of 2016?

We’ve got a lot of work to do this year. On top of releasing our standalone single ‘Gathering the Pieces of a Broken Heart’, we’re heading down to RAK studios in the next month to record a second EP to release around September. Alongside touring, playing a few festivals including Bestival and releasing a few music videos – it’s set to be a great year!
