Amoriste

Originally forming in 2007 the band have changed alias and have just signed a deal with My Satellite Records. The band released their EP ‘Under The Hours Of Satellite Towers’ this July and have adopted extremely unique ‘on tour’ promotion skills which you can learn more about by reading our interview with the band’s Bass player David Crawford.

Why did the band change their name from Soprano to Amoriste?
In late 2008 we found ourselves at a bit of a crossroads with the band. It was really a chance for a new beginning and a fresh start. The name was taken from a group of French poets called “amoristes” who wrote about love.

What song would they say best describes their new alias?
‘Berlin’ is the story of this new start, overcoming problems and coming out the other side triumphant.

Could you explain a little more about the Club Fandango live circuit for those who aren’t aware of it?
We’re very lucky to be a part of the Club Fandango circuit in London. It’s a subsidiary of Fierce Panda Records and invites the latest up and coming acts to play at some of the city’s coolest venues. For a new band, the benchmark is definitely a slot at a Fandango gig.

How did it feel being invited to perform at ‘City Showcase’?
It was great finding out we had been chosen. Obviously in the past this was the place to be as far as A&R and connections to the next level of the music business. Unfortunately, the gig itself wasn’t quite on the scale we had expected. Here’s looking to next year and a better venue!

The band used the unique technique of busking whilst on tour, will you continue to do so throughout the years as a unique twist or was this a one off method?
It’s definitely something we will be continuing with in the near future. Firstly, without boring you, our web activity jumped through the roof as a result of our marketing plan. Although, just to be out there in the streets meeting people, having a laugh, taking pictures and making friends with potential fans is priceless.

Who initially decided the band would take this varied approach?
We have always had the idea floating around and it has been something we have done as a one off. I guess it goes back to the old days of playing in peoples front rooms! So this time around we wanted to make the most out of being on tour. It’s all fine waking up at 3pm and going to a venue, playing then heading back to bed but if you want to spread the word of what you’re doing you have no choice but to make every second count, I think we all realised that.

How do the band come around writing their music?
Liam and Phil are our front line songwriters. Liam usually comes up with an idea on guitar or Phil on keys and then it gets brought into the studio. Then drums and bass are added and the song gets fully structured, re-structured and layered with all sorts of instruments and vocals. The whole process for a song can take well over a month. It’s always interesting listening back to the first ‘bedroom demo’ of the song compared to the final product.

What are the bands plans for the future?
We have just signed an album deal with My Satellite Records which is a label run and owned by us and is funded by a private investor. We’re very lucky to be working with two members from 90’s indie sensation ‘Embrace’ who will be producing the album. We’re hoping to release a couple of singles before the album is launched in 2011.
