Golden State

Hailing from Los Angeles they have been known as ‘pop music’s best kept secret’ and Love Music; Love Life were lucky to be invited for an inside view, by talking to lead singer James Grundler.

Golden State have worked with Grammy Winning producers Rick Rubin and John Shanks, as well as having their song “Some Things Must Go This Way” covered by Scott Weiland on his latest solo album.

The band can be best described as offering an American alternative to bands like U2 and Radiohead.

Firstly, Where did the name of the band come from?
I love answering this question. My bass player Alex was in Nashville working as a camera and sound guy for this program on VH1. At the end of one of his long and boring days, he and his producer went to one of the many ‘honky tonk bars’ on the main street. Now we have been talking about names for some time and nothing seemed to stick until that fateful night.
There was an old Honky tonk group on the band stand and they were apparently singing a song and one of the lyrics were “going back to the golden state”. He called me immediately that night and said “Brother! I have the name…GOLDEN STATE!!” I was so blown away and pissed at the same time because I cant believe we never thought of that before, I loved it. And thus we were on our way…

What band would you say inspires you the most?
Wow this one is a very loaded question, ha! Allow me to re – load! I dont think i can name just one.
My inspiration comes from all those great bands and artists that write songs that have become the theme to my life! Hahaha now if that didn’t sound pretentious!
But seriously, bands like The Verve, U2, Catherine Wheel, Band of Horses, Johnny Cash, and whole sleu of composers would probably fit the bill…

Where do you find your writing inspiration?
My inspiration right now comes from the area we live in. Los Angeles has the most ridiculous people and places in the world, such a great grab-bag to get inspiration from!!

If someone hadn’t heard your music, how would you describe it to them and if you could urge them to listen to one song, what would it be and why?
After people see our shows they cant believe that we aren’t the biggest band in the world right now. I would tell them to listen to All Roads Lead Home, I think it sums it up.

Do you ever plan on doing a UK tour?
Oh man, I was hoping you were gonna ask that! We can’t wait to come over there, I feel that the uk folks would really dig it!!

What’s next for Golden State?
Looking for a way to get our asses over there… duh!

So now it’s just the waiting game to see when Golden State will be hitting the UK!
