Marines

Marines are an indie/brit rock 5-piece from Suffolk who are five friends doing what they love best – playing music.

With over 1,000 fans on Facebook and exciting future plans, we caught up with Tim from the band to let him introduce Marines to you.

Firstly a question you are no doubt sick of hearing, how did the band come up with the name ‘Marines’?

We were formerly in a band called ‘Tell it to the Marines’. We were in that band growing up and as soon as Jason joined, we thought we’d shorten the name and re-evaluate everything as a band. So, we quit that band, recorded an album and simply nicked the ‘marines’ part to go ahead with. You wouldn’t believe the amount of people who ask if we’re in the actual Marines, it’s ridiculous!

Which artists/bands would you cite as your strongest influences?

We’re all into such different bands, it’d be unfair to say. But Blur, Travis and Coldplay all have their influence on us.

Which track would you recommend readers to listen to if they have not discovered the band before?

We have only currently released three tracks, one of which is a live acoustic track. I’d say try them all out, because they are all so different. YouTube Marines – Emily Bigswell / Tiny Little Tom or A long way Down.

In terms of your music videos, how much of a say do you have in the process?

Well so far in our careers, we’ve had ALL the say. In fact, me and my brother Matt filmed it all. It’s a liberating thing for us to do and it’s nice to have control over the artist output of the band.

What would you say differentiates yourself from alike bands in the music scene?

I’m not sure. I don’t know whether differentiating yourself from anything is the most important thing for us, it’s just whether you can make a direct connection to someone. I think we’re not trying to be ‘rockstars’ or anything we’re not, y’know? We’re just five lads from Suffolk and I think that’ll relate to a lot of people. We just try write honest songs and try to be honest as ‘them lads in that band’. Not enough people are like that, recently.

If you could collaborate with any artist or band, who would it be and why?

Adele, she’s very alright. I always said I’d like to do a duet with Dido as well, but everyone wants to hit me for that. I like Gary Barlow actually. The band are gonna kill me for these answers, but bugger it – put them all in a recording booth with me and I’d be a happy man. It kind of sounds like the next ‘do they know it’s christmas?’ line up!

What can we expect from Marines in the future?

We’re in that strange limbo stage of not knowing fully what our future holds. But so far, all routes seem exciting. More singles & videos, of course and we’re playing a special little show in London around November/December time. Until then, I’d hate to make presumptions but a lot of exciting things. Whether people like it or not, Marines are gonna be about, everywhere very shortly.

Marines are:
Tim Hyland – vocals & guitar
John Phillips – guitar & vocals
Dan Fretwell – guitar & vocals
