More Than Conquerors

Forming in 2009, More Than Conquerors have won over their native Belfast and with fans in acts such as Jimmy Eat World, Feeder, Twin Atlantic and many more, as they say – the only way is up!

Signed to Northen Irish Indie label Smalltown America, who have signed the likes of And So I Watch You From Afra, LaFaro and Jetplane Landing, the band have released 2 EP’s to-date and this summer appeared main-stage at Northern Irish festival Glasgowbury.

We caught up with the band before embarking on their first headline UK tour this month.

Since forming in 2009, how do you feel the band have changed?

The music has definitely changed. We’re still trying to find a sound that we’re happy with, but this new EP is a good representation of what we want at the minute.

How do you feel the music scene is in Belfast at the moment?

It’s pretty healthy at the minute. There’s a lot of bands but more importantly, a lot of high quality bands like LaFaro, Fighting with wire, Mojo Fury, ASIWYFA and a whole lot more, bands that have influenced us from the start.

How would you describe your sound generally for those who have yet to discover the band?

Its a mix of a lot of things. It’s been described by other people as funk punk, indie, or just rock.

Who would you cite as your main influences musically?

We’ve been listening to a lot of mewithoutyou, Manchester Orchestra, Reuben, As Cities Burn, Thrice, Biffy Clyro, John Farnham and a whole lot of SixStarHotel.

Your ‘Boots & Bones’ EP has recently been released, how would you describe the EP?

Its a collection of dark stories based on human incidences, but described using animals.

How did you arrive at the title for the EP?

There’s a track on the EP called Bear Knuckle Fight that has the line,”there’s nothing left of me to take, but boots and bones”. We played about with a few names but we all felt that with the artwork and the songs on this EP, it fitted.

How would you describe your live sound?

It’s definitely raw. We like to play every show with the same passion and energy regardless of where it is or who it’s to. Thats when we feel most at home, playing live shows and getting everyone in the room involved.

What do you feel has been your biggest band achievement to-date?

It’s hard to say. We got shows in big venues with the likes of Jimmy Eat World which is always a pleasure, but sometimes its the fact that we are signed to a great label and are working hard at it that makes us all feel proud.
