My Little Empire

My Little Empire have played to packed crowds around London and have featured on BBC Introducing. The band have just released their debut single ‘I Will Still Be There’.

The track, produced by Tom Mitchener of Spy Catcher who previously has worked with the likes of Young Guns and Kids In Glass houses, has meant that big things are expected from the band and after listening to the single – we love it!

We caught up with them to find out more.

Where did the band’s name come from?
The bands name was taken from the Manic Street Preacher song ” My Little Empire”, but people have started shortening our name to MLE, we don’t mind either way! We flirted with the name “Boys Don’t Cry” for about a week, but it never stuck.

Who would you say is your strongest influences?
We could now write a long list of bands we have listened to growing up, but that would be far too long! The good thing about MLE is that we all like different types of music! For example, Nathan (drums) loves his R&B & Hip Hop and Rob (vocals) is really into bands like Gallows & Kids in glass houses; both at totally different ends of the musical spectrum! We do get compared to Kings of Leon a bit, but we can never hear it ourselves.

What was the idea behind your music video for ‘I Will Still Be There’?
The video mirrors what the song is all about! Boy likes Girl – Girl doesn’t like Boy that much – so she gets with a new guy while they are watching some fantastic band – Simple!
The video took us 2 days to film and we had such a good time shooting. We asked all of our good mates to be involved, which made it all the more enjoyable. We are so happy with the outcome.

If someone hadn’t heard your music and you were to describe it to them in 3 words, what would these be?
Definitely Melodic; our songs have really strong melodies and are so easy to sing along to.
Energetic; most of our songs are really upbeat with tons of energy, as is our stage presence when we play live.
Catchy; you will be singing along by the second chorus, trust us!

What has personally been the best gig you have ever played?
For all of us it would be practically selling out the Bull n Gate Kentish Town in Feb 2011. As individuals we have been there so many times to see other bands play, but we have never seen it that packed and every one there was for us! That was a real special one. The gigs we do just seem to be getting better and bigger each time!

Which track of your own would you say is the best one to ‘showcase’ the band?
Our début Single ” I Will Still Be There” would be best. It sums MLE up in that song, that’s what we are about! Energetic songs with strong melodies that you will find yourself singing at really strange times of the day! We have never tried to be the next ‘big thing’ or follow the trends. It would have been so easy to get a synth in a year ago when that was all the craze, but we just stuck to our guns and did what we knew best – to write simple songs every one can listen too and enjoy!

Who would be your dream band to go on tour with?
The Rolling Stones – Rob
Red Hot Chilli Peppers – Keith
The Who – Stu
AC/DC – Nathan

What can we expect in the future from My Little Empire?
Well our début single is out 14th March 2011 on iTunes and all the rest! We are talking to a few festivals at the moment, so we will keep you posted. We have a home-coming gig at the Horn St Albans in April.
Also, we have just come out of the studio after recording a few tracks and our second single. It’s definitely going to be a busy 2011 for us!!
