Paul Child Band

Paul Child Band is an English folk-rock band who are set to release their debut EP “Runaway. Relax. Resign” this year.

Made up of Tommy Bates, Fionn Brewer, Paul Child, Kait Farbon and Damien Langkamer, the band formed from the creative mind of singer/songwriter Paul Child.

The band pride themselves on their live performances and believe that festival scenes are most suited to their different style.

We caught up with the band to find out more and to allow them to introduce themselves to you…

Since forming last year, how do you feel the band has progressed?

Our sound has evolved, we’ve matured as musicians. Playing live as much as we have has given us a chance to see what works and what doesn’t from both a band and audience perspective, which has then lead us to becoming a tighter and more confident unit, which consequently has had an effect on the songs themselves as well as our performance. Playing to bigger audiences has also been a massive confidence boost, our sound is definitely geared towards the whole festival vibe and the unique atmosphere of playing outside, so the more of that the better!!!

What would you say has been your biggest achievement to date?

As a band we set ourselves realistic and achievable targets, 2011 has surpassed our expectations. Getting played and interviewed on the BBC and performing at some of the bigger UK festivals have definitely been amazing highlights of the year, our biggest achievement as a band so far has to be our new EP ‘Runaway. Relax. Resign.’ which we’re releasing in March 2012. The whole process was so satisfying from start to finish, we took our time and developed the tracks in rehearsal and then took the whole of the summer recording it. We’ve taken our sound to a different place, it’s still us but we have more of an understanding of who we are as a band which then lends itself to what we hope is a more defined and rounded record.

How would you describe the band for those who have yet to discover you?

We’re a folky, rock band, with influences (within the band) ranging from funk and jazz to classical. We’re all about the live stage dynamic and hope to make you stamp your feet!!

Which track would you recommend to introduce yourselves?

Our new single ‘The Same’ which you can download for free from our website www.paulchildband.com.

Who would you cite as your strongest musical influence?

Everyone in the band has their own influences which manifest themselves in different aspects of the what is the overall sound. From an initial songwriting perspective my main inspirations come from artists such as – Nick Drake, Jeff Buckley, Peter Gabriel, Elbow, Dave Matthews, The Water Boys, Bela Fleck, Police, Incubus and Steps.

You’re set to tour mid 2012, do you have any idea of what fans can expect from this tour yet?

We like to think that our audiences come away with something different from every show we play, each show will be full of energy and rocking outness!!! wear your dancing shoes!!!

What can we expect from the band in 2012?

Well to start with our first gig in 2012 is Folk & Dagger at Hoxton Underbelly on Tuesday 17th January. You can expect a lot of London gigs throughout February, and then we’ve got our EP launch and subsequent tour in March and festivals in the summer.
