Sukh is a new folk singer/songwriter based in Manchester.

His love of music, like many musicians, started at a young age when he was writing music at the age of 16 when he was scoring a film for school.

We caught up with Sukh to find out more.

How do you feel folk music is doing in the music scene at the moment?

Interesting question. I think if you trace folk back it’s all about songs passed down from generation to generation. Then people like Guthrie and Dylan came along and with them the singer-songwriter was born. Joni Mitchell, Jackson Browne, Springsteen and countless others pushed things in different directions. Not strictly folk they sort of created a folk-y music. I would say as a genre at the moment there are a lot of folk influences on the radio. My music is folk-y. And i think folk-y music is becoming more popular at the moment.

What do you believe your music adds to the scene?

To be honest it’s hard to pinpoint and I’m not so good at blowing my own trumpet. All I can say is I think my “sound” is “my” sound. It wasn’t always like that.

You write, perform and produce all your material yourself – how did this come around?

I used to be in bands. I got tired of waiting around and time started rolling by. I decided to make an album and then that’s what I did. Sometimes there’s no point in waiting for someone to discover you when you can just get on with it. I had some help from friends here and there and I’m forever grateful to them.

How would you best describe your debut single?

It’s a song about optimism and self-respect.

For those who may have not discovered your music yet, who would you say your sound is most alike?

Elements of Dylan, Sufjan Stevens, and the post rock scene. Some people say I sound a bit like Mumford and Sons but I never thought so.

Who do you cite as your strongest musical inspirations?

Dylan, Sigur Ros, the National, Phoenix, Nobou Uematsu, and numerous film composers.

How are you finding balancing your day job and your music career?

I work long days in hospital often with over 12 hr shifts including nights. Writing is never the issue. That comes relatively easily. I do have to plan a lot more in advance with gigs and videos etc.. I don’t have much time to do much else but you do it because you love it right?!

Where would be your dream venue to perform?

Love to play on Later with Jools Holland. That would be a dream!

What can we expect in 2013?

Well my single is out, music videos to follow, gigs around the UK, and album out before Christmas.
