Live Review | Clyde 1 Live | Glasgow SSE Hydro

Clyde 1 brought six acts to the SSE Hydro for a special pre-Christmas show.

With a blend of familiar faces and newer acts on the scene, the radio station continued its festive tradition with a night of music in Glasgow.

Opening the night were The 1975 who kick-started the show with their short but sweet set. After a jam-packed year for the guys, they showcased exactly why they’d made 2016 a year to remember following the release of their sophomore studio album ‘i like it when you sleep for you are so beautiful yet so unaware of it’. Treating the crowd to a range of tracks from the new release with older fan favourite ‘Chocolate’ thrown into the mix, it was hard not to keep still as their inspiring energy filled the room. Set highlight came in the form of their new single ‘The Sound’ which had the crowd jumping and singing along from the first beat as they proved they were the perfect opener the show.

Next up were Blossoms who brought a festival vibe to the arena, despite not many of the crowd seeming to know their tracks. With a cheeky little ‘Last Christmas’ singsong thrown into their set to encourage crowd involvement, the indie guys showcased their strong potential for the future. With their debut album becoming the highest selling British debut record of 2016, they’re definitely ones to keep an eye on and will no doubt make their way to headlining arenas alike the SSE Hydro in the very near future.

Between sets, large video screens kept the waiting crowd entertained, however, this did seem to drag on a little longer than needed later in the night. The standing crowd seemed sparse at points as some exited the arena floor for a walk around the vendors to kill time, therefore it would be great if they had slotted some acoustic acts during set up or alternative entertainment between main sets.

After the break, Kaiser Chiefs performed a range of their old hits from ‘Never Miss A Beat’ and ‘Ruby’ through to ‘I Predict A Riot’ with over-enthusiastic frontman Ricky bounding around the stage. The crowd were eager to sing along for those brief chorus moments as the band served up a throwback set for those a little older to enjoy.

Kicking back with Tom Odell, it was evident from the moment he stepped onto the stage that he has a passion for his music with his infectious cheery attitude. Commanding the venue with ease, the singer’s charming vocals captivated the crowd with highlights including ‘Another Love’ and ‘Magnetised’.

Tipped as one to watch in 2017, James TW continued the chilled atmosphere bringing his Ed Sheeran vibe to the Hydro. His flawless vocals were more than impressive as he won over the crowd with a taster of tunes. In particular, radio favourite ‘When You Love Someone’ created a special moment in the arena for a moment of reflection with its poignant lyrics.

Ending the night and ramping the energy back up were Bastille who stepped onto the stage and breezed their way through their short set as if it was simply second nature to them. Creating a feel-good festival vibe, alike earlier band Blossoms, frontman Dan Smith’s distinctive vocals led the way as their infectious energy captivated the arena crowd. They were the perfect choice to close the night with a bang and it was clear both the crowd and band would have happily enjoyed a much longer set.

Overall, Clyde 1 created a fantastic night out blending some of the top bands of the year with a few known faces, showcasing a mix of bands and genres for all ages.

With packing in so many acts, this was a great move for variety, but it did mean some sets felt rather rushed and too short a snippet of each act as the energy seemingly dipped between sets.

Despite this, it was a great mixed bill and certainly prepped the crowd for 2017 with a few new acts to keep on their radar.
