Live Review | John Newman | Leeds O2 Academy

john newmanIn just over seven months Settle born John Newman has had a worldwide hit with his début solo single, Love Me Again, a number one UK album, two sold out UK tours and BRIT Award nominations.

When he played these songs four months ago at his homecoming gig at Victoria Hall, the tracks were unknown to the audience. Now, they are greeted by the crowd with enthusiasm who sing along to the songs.

The support act new artist Lolo, who comes from Brooklyn, sounds on record a little like Amy Winehouse with a more R&B groove, but live she transforms into a far rockier prospect. It might not have been the brightest idea to dress all in black whilst performing against a black backdrop but her performance was engaging. Think Pixie Lott mixed with Sharleen Spiteri from the group Texas and you will be on the right track.

The best song of her set was her next single out in mid-February, Gangsters, which will be a big hit if it gets the radio airplay it deserves.

Images of him are projected on to a black screen as the title track of his début album, Tribute plays out over the PA, the curtain drops and there he stands at the top of the stairs.

I’ve wanted to play this venue for so long!” he informs the sold out audience. He sounded to be suffering from a cold, but that did not stop him giving his fans 100% as usual.

The set list is basically the same as on his début tour last November, albeit with the addition of two new songs. There is enough light and shade in the set with All I Need is You and Losing Sleep being two of the many highlights.

He has a good stage presence and his dancing along with his commanding vocals suggest he is in this for the long haul. Gold Dust closes his set before he returns to the stage for a rousing version of Rudimental‘s Not Giving In, the track he sang lead vocals on.

There was only one song left to perform, yes, it was the track that he will still be singing on stage on 10 years time to sell out crowds. Love Me Again closed the evening and Yorkshire’s newest and most durable artist left everyone with a smile on their face.
