Live Review | Kaiser Chiefs | Usher Hall

As the snow fell outside we made our way into the packed out Usher Hall for a night of music from indie rockers Kaiser Chiefs.

Surrounded by a very mixed crowd from couples to families to friends young and old, the Kaiser Chiefs’ fan base is certainly eclectic!

The night kicked off with Public Service Broadcasting, a London-based instrumental three-piece using samples from old public information films, archive footage and propaganda material to create musical innovations. The band received a real a mixed reaction from the crowd, from hardcore fans sporting merchandise to people like myself being introduced to them for the first time. We were treated to new material from the forthcoming album ‘The Race For Space’, including single ‘Go’.

At 9pm sharp, the room filled with smoke and Leeds lads Kaiser Chiefs appeared on stage. From the start it was clear the rowdy crowd were ready for an evening of jumping, dancing and singing along. It was also clear Ricky Wilson had already been enjoying himself before the concert had even begun!

A true showman Ricky Wilson used the whole stage to perform his high-energy routine of jumping, running and climbing on top of drum kits and amps. Kaiser Chiefs are well-known for their anthemic sound and they did not disappoint performing all their classic hits including ‘Ruby’, ‘Na Na Na Naa’ and ‘I Predict a Riot’ as well as 2014 single ‘Coming Home’.

Not content with only using the stage, Ricky made a surprise appearance on the balcony where he proceeded to climb over the unsuspecting, and some very excitable, audience members. Aptly using this section of the show to perform ‘The Angry Mob’, Ricky was let loose as he climbed the balcony edge.

Their cover of ‘Pinball Wizard’ was a pleasant surprise and one that was shared with the rest of the crowd. Everyone loves The Who sing-song, right? We were also treated to new single ‘Falling Awake’ due for release on 9th March. ‘Falling Awake’ has a much more electronic feel than other Kaiser Chiefs hits however they have not disappointed with another sing-along chorus which was difficult not to pick up by the second chorus!

Bagpipes from kilt-clad local bagpiper and crowd pleaser ‘Oh My God’ finished what was a fantastic, high energy concert. Whispers from the crowd as we left made it clear everyone enjoyed it!!
