Live Review | Muse | Barrowland

Fans of Muse went into meltdown when the British rockers announced a surprise tour earlier this month to promote their upcoming seventh studio album, ‘Drones’.

Tickets for the six-date tour were snapped up in seconds as the band’s fans raced to see the trio in venues much smaller than they would normally play. Those who were lucky enough to get their hands on a ticket were treated to a variety of hits from the band’s back catalogue with a couple of newbies, including current single ‘Psycho’, thrown in for good measure.

Yorkshire five-piece Marmozets kicked off the evening in a rather loud fashion, impressing with the energy they brought to an already heightened atmosphere.

Matt Bellamy, Chris Wolstenholme and Dominic Howard were met with huge cheers and plenty of rock hands when they finally stepped onto the legendary Barrowland stage as spotlights scanned the room.

The aggressive sounding ‘Psycho‘ was up first, quickly followed by two of the band’s earliest hits, ‘Uno‘ and ‘Bliss‘ – which frontman Bellamy accurately described as “a couple of old bastards”.

The trio appeared relaxed ahead of the upcoming release of ‘Drones’ and a headlining spot at this year’s Download festival. The notoriously tight-lipped Bellamy was in fine form, engaging in some light-hearted banter with the crowd between guitar solos.

While ‘Starlight‘, ‘Supermassive Black Hole‘ and ‘Knights of Cydonia‘ from 2006’s ‘Black Holes and Revelations’ clearly remain fan favourites, the reaction to 2001’s ‘Plug in Baby‘ nearly brought the glow-in-the-dark stars on the Barrowland ceiling down.

An encore of ‘Animals‘ from 2012’s ‘The 2nd Law’, 2003 breakthrough track ‘Time is Running Out‘ and the whirling ‘Reapers‘ from the new album closed an incredible night of live music from a band who look to be back to their best.
