Live Review | One Direction | Murrayfield Stadium

one direction64,000 people, a 383 day wait and a record-breaking performance.

Last night, fans at Murrayfield experienced a historic moment as the One Direction boys claimed the title of the biggest Scottish gig in history.

And it was certainly a night to remember.

5 Seconds of Summer were the main and only support on the tour and it seems the Edinburgh crowd were familiar with the boys, as screams filled the air when they bounded into the stage. We had heard a lot about the band, but never caught them live until now and it’s easy to see why the hype has built up. Within one song it was hard not to like the smiley energetic Australians as they jumped around the stage. The band even took the time to explain who they were and where they were from allowing each member a little moment to shine in their set. Popular songs included Don’t Stop, Heartbreak Girl and catchy tune She Looks So Perfect, the band also added a nice little touch with a cover of Katy Perry’s Teenage Dream.

And now it was time for the boys. After fans counted down for over one year, they were finally here for the only Scottish stop on the tour.

As the intro video began to play, screams and camera lights began to fill the air.

As fireworks shot out from the stage, Harry, Niall, Zayn, Louis and Liam appeared opening with Midnight Memories.

And from that moment on, the boys ran around the stage, showcased their vocal talent and made sure every direction of the stadium was covered, paying attention to each section of the crowd giving them their moment.

Unfortunately for fans of Mr Styles, the singer was unwell and therefore could not sing on the night. This gave him the chance to show his appreciation to fans as instead of singing, he spent the whole gig interacting with fans and dancing through the night.

Their stage contained a walkway with a somewhat obstacle course looking structure allowing the boys to walk up steps, jump on barriers and slide down ramps.

Slightly different to the boy’s first appearance in Scotland when they squeezed onto the stage in a nightclub.

And there’s one thing you can’t deny about the boys – their vocal talent. As each member, who was able to sing, sang their hearts out managing to hit every note with ease.

Particularly, members Liam Payne and Niall Horan stole the Scottish show limelight recovering the lacking vocals and maintaining energy throughout the full set.

The duo were definitely a super team on the night reviving what could have been a risky situation due to illness.

Meanwhile, Styles danced his way through the night taking time to interact with each area of the crowd, Louis Tomlinson seemed to be suffering from the lurgy too as he dashed off stage to find something warmer to wear and kept very quiet on the night with a lack of energy, alongside Zayn Malik who was also rather quiet and contained.

Despite a little slip up blamed on this lurgy, as Zayn yelled out ‘Hello Manchester’, the boys quickly recovered with more hit songs and even won the Scots crowd over with a little rendition of The Proclaimer’s 500 Miles.

It was certainly clear to hear a slight difference in the band’s sound without Harry Style’s voice proving why the five-piece work together so well.

Top songs in the set included Kiss You, Diana, Little White Lies, Little Things and Best Song Ever.

And as the set drew to an end, the band individually took the time to thank the crowd as they gathered in the middle of the stage having a chat about how the night had gone. Harry even managed to croak a goodbye and thank you message while Liam explained singing Harry’s parts for the night was enjoyable and he thought it was one of the best crowds of the tour. Niall praised the crowd for singing along and showed his appreciation for the Scottish singsongs.

And as the boys descended beneath the stage as fireworks lit up the stadium, it’s hard not to have a beaming smile across your face at how happy the band have made the 64,000 crowd and how far they have come in four years after making the fateful move to sign up for X Factor.
