Live Review | State Champs | Glasgow O2 ABC

State Champs returned to the UK for 8 headline shows with Northbound and As It Is.

It was the band’s second time at Glasgow’s O2 ABC following their support slot with New Found Glory in 2015, but for this show the spotlight was on them.

With the gig upgraded to a larger venue due to ticket sales, it was clear State Champs fanbase were out in force and there was a high anticipation in the air, especially when the crowd began the traditional Glasgow chant before the band had even stepped foot onto the stage.

Catapulting straight into ‘Losing Myself’, the crowd were off their feet as the enthusiastic band bounded across the stage.

With an extremely strong opener, there was surprisingly no lull throughout the entire night as the crowd and band maintained this high octane energy until the end of the set. It was easy to see State Champs loved every second as they made the stage their home inviting fans around to their place for a party.

State Champs sound just as polished and accomplished live as they do on their album releases. With frontman Derek DiScanio outstanding vocals leading the night, particularly within the acoustic section including set highlight ‘If I’m Lucky’.

Taking the crowd on a journey from 2012’s ‘Critical’ to singalongs with ‘Shape Up’ and ‘All You Are Is History’, the night was packed with tracks showcasing their versatility and undeniable talent.

Ending on their most known hit ‘Secrets’, State Champs had completely charmed Glasgow.

With a slick, well-polished set, soundtracked by Derek’s dreamy vocals and the band’s high octane energy throughout, we’ve never heard so many Glasgow chants in one set – and they were well deserved. Without a doubt, State Champs are one of the best live bands around.
