Live Review | The 1975 | Glasgow Barrowlands

When lead singer Matty Healy strolls onto the stage with a bottle of wine in hand, a cigarette in the other and a smile across his face, it doesn’t take long for the party to start.

The 1975 are no strangers to Glasgow, they’re one of the bands who have worked their way up from the 300 capacity King Tuts to two sold out shows at the iconic 1900 capacity Barrowlands.

With the crowd raring to go in the rather warm venue, when the lights dimmed and smoke began billowing out from the stage, it was time to dance.

As soon as the band appeared, the crowd erupted with applause and cheers, before a single note blared from the speakers.

And this energy from the crowd was maintained the whole gig as they joined in dancing their way through the set, hands in the air, jumping and singing along as the band’s set flawlessly transferred from one song to the next timed perfectly with their known black and white vibe.

The band proved why their album has been received so well across the globe. With each track as catchy as the next and played flawlessly as if you were listening to the album, with an added sprinkling of the gigging spark.

The guys look completely at home on the stage throughout the gig, connecting together well and proving their instrumental talents with ease, including the latest addition John Waugh on the sax.

Highlights of the set included Heart Out, M.O.N.E.Y, Me and Settle Down.

It wouldn’t be the 1975 gig without the usual fan chants – of course ‘we want sex’ echoed through the venue before the track began.

As the band left the stage, the venue seemed to stand still hanging onto the last few seconds of the gig.

When you go to see the 1975 live, it’s not simply a gig – it’s a party and you’re all invited.

Grab a pint and get ready to dance.
