Live Review | The Vamps | Edinburgh Castle

Edinburgh Castle kicked of its summer concert series with a trio of bands bringing a night fuelled with pop and a sprinkling of rock to the city.

Surprisingly there were many empty seats surrounding the esplanade, which was unexpected as the band easily packed out two nights at Glasgow’s Hydro arena earlier in the year.

Opening the show were Irish chaps HomeTown with the six-piece easing fans gently into the night with a few tunes and cover songs.

Next up were Union J who proved why they are one of the very few bands to stand the test of time post-X Factor fame. With incredible vocals from start to finish, the band looked at ease on the stage with highlights in their set including ‘Central Park’ and ‘Carry You’. With their cheery attitudes and fantastic bond, it’s easy to fall for their charm.

Typically, it was just as the rain began to pour that The Vamps took to the stage ready to rock. Ramping things up from the pop feast, the four-piece bounded onto the stage with high energy to beat the bad weather blues.

The band showcased that they are capable of a variety of genres, mixing it up throughout the set. From covers including ‘Uptown Funk’ into ‘Shake It Off’ to a rock touch with Sum 41’s ‘In Too Deep’ and My Chemical Romance ‘Teenagers’.

Each band member was also given their time in the spotlight, proving they are young talented musicians, as they swapped instruments and prepared for solo sections. Frontman Bradley Simpson found the time to showcase his guitar, vocals, piano and drumming skills within the set.

From incredible vocals to high energy and passion, with top tracks including ‘Last Night’, ‘Oh Cecilia (Breaking My Heart) and ‘Can We Dance’, The Vamps have carved their own route in the pop world, bringing with them a plethora of talent for the journey.

It’s not often you can spend a Saturday summer night within the grounds of Edinburgh castle watching live music – just don’t forget your umbrella!
