Live Review | Years & Years | Glasgow O2 ABC

You would be hard pressed to find someone who hasn’t heard a Years & Years song on the radio.

The young electro pop band have been all over the UK’s airwaves since Radio 1 played the track ‘King’ back in January.

It’s probably pretty safe to assume the Cardiff formed trio’s catchy tunes have grabbed them plenty of summer festival slots for 2016 while they work on some follow-up material to this summer’s ‘Communion’, their debut album after more than four years together.

While ‘Communion’ provided several radio friendly hits like ‘Desire‘ and ‘Shine‘ which get the crowd going on a Saturday night in Glasgow; it’s the album’s subtler, darker and dirtier beats that really stand out in the live setting.

Take Shelter‘ has a thumping bass line that brings to mind a neon splattered rave, ‘Real‘ just asks for you to move with the pounding beat and ‘Worship‘ is a pure ‘hands in the air’ festival banger.

A young fan joins the band on stage for a moving version of ballad ‘Eyes Shut‘, before the 90’s kids in attendance enthusiastically join in a cheeky cover of Sean Paul and Blu Cantrell’s 2003 hit ‘Breathe‘.

The only way for Years & Years to round off the show is, of course, with the song that brought them into the public eye. As the chorus of ‘King‘ hits you can tell that although their set may only just pass the one hour mark now, it’s clear that there’s so much more to come from this promising trio.
