General Fiasco

The 22nd of February saw General Fiasco stop off at Manchester Academy 3 on their short but sweet five-show stint. While it was definitely not a lengthy tour, it was enough to keep the fans happy and make sure the band stayed on the radar. After their newest EP ‘Waves’, released on the 14th of November, and another named ‘Don’t You Ever’ scheduled for release on the 4th of March, the set-list was a combination of both new songs and older favourites from 2010’s debut album ‘Buildings’.

The crowd gave the band a warm welcome as they entered the stage, and after the second song of the set, ‘We Are The Foolish’, they were definitely warmed up and the buzz in the atmosphere was obviously increasing. Whilst the new songs were performed excellently, the older ones were undoubtedly the favourites with each one being welcomed with screams and the crowd dancing and singing along, matching the energy of the boys on the stage.

The quartet were definitely on form as they powered through the entire set. Owen Strathern’s vocals were no different to that on CD and with the flawless instrumentation, the northern Irish foursome proved they were definitely worthy of the filled venue and there was absolutely nothing to be criticised. One of the highlights of the show was when Owen was left alone on stage to perform an acoustic version of ‘Sinking Ships’, the voices of the crowd clearer than ever as well as the lead-singer’s vocal and musical talent.

‘Ever So Shy’ and final song ‘Rebel Get By’ proved two of the absolute favourites, resulting in the best crowd reactions of the night and as the show went on, the quality of the band’s music and live performance only became more and more apparent. Their music is up-beat and catchy but you can definitely notice the development that has happened in the two years between ‘Buildings’ and their newer music. Newest single and title track, ‘Waves’, is something to be proud of, as is the rest of the EP and with another EP coming shortly as well as an album expected in the early summertime, the anticipation is great. But if it is anything like what they have released already, it will easily be a hit with the fans and hopefully bring much more well-deserved attention to the band.
