Rachel Alice Johnson | 5 tracks and acts that influenced ‘Coming Down Slow’

Rachel Alice Johnson - Love Music; Love Life

Rachel Alice Johnson is set to release her new single ‘Coming Down Slow’.

Due out on November 8th, Rachel will celebrate the release with a headline show at Edinburgh’s Sneaky Pete’s.

As Rachel gears up to release her new single, she shared 5 singles that shaped the release of ‘Coming Down Slow’.

‘Tennis Court’ – Lorde
I find Lorde so inventive with composition, where she takes and twists minimal sounds in her songs to create something unique. I adore her fierce, uncompromising performances and her fiery attitude to lyrics, particularly when it’s combined with her dark contralto voice. ‘Tennis Court’ will always resonate with me as an alpha female anthem; the way she spits out and delivers every line is so fearless.

‘Don’t Tell’ – Royal Blood
My favourite track on the new Royal Blood album is actually ‘She’s Creeping’, however the bass drop in ‘Don’t Tell’ at 2.23 is my highlight of the whole album, which is mirrored in ‘Coming Down Slow’. I adore how the song suddenly goes into a 30-second mania, before resorting to normality.

‘Sunspots’ – Nine Inch Nails
I think this is quite an obvious choice for my style of music, the heavy bass distortions layered with a light falsetto top line. I love how the song builds, with contrasts in heaviness from every verse/chorus, and the increase in drama as the song progresses.

The Black Keys
I have such high respect for The Black Keys keeping retro and low-fi works contemporary in the music industry. Listening to their work always gives me the confidence to stay away from the trend and to instead create music that’s interesting to me.

Lana Del Rey
Once I first heard Lana back in 2012 it really changed the way I listened and wrote music. The honesty in her dark lyrics were so open and raw, proving there’s so much beauty in melancholy. Her stripped back production in her Ultraviolence era will always influence my sound, as she produced something so real and intense, leaving every break in her voice audible.
