Single Review | Rat Boy – Laidback

Rat Boy - Love Music; Love Life

It’s easy to compare Rat Boy’s first releases to Jamie T, with less darkness and more fun.

With most recent track ‘Laidback’, Rat Boy has stepped away from his usual formula releasing a single sounding extremely similar to The Kooks, with summery and cheery guitar chords and added woodwind.

His previous songs contained a bit of cheekiness and danger to them, whereas ‘Laidback’ doesn’t project the same attitude towards society and culture alike recent singles ‘Fake ID’ and ‘Sign On’.

It does, however, have a catchy chorus and lifts your spirits with its barrage of various sounds, similar to Glass animals but with stronger vocals.

The song as a whole is more interesting than most of the chart music at the moment, but it falls short compared to the previous tracks taken from the forthcoming debut album.

This song doesn’t make you eager to hear the rest of the album as it feels too similar to previous releases from five years ago when bands alike The Kooks and The Kaiser Chiefs were still relevant.

Rat Boy has showcased a versatile side, but this is perhaps a little too dependent on the favoured sounds from the past, unlike his previous lyrical life reflections.
